Sheila Terman Cohen

I have written two books for the Wisconsin State Historical Society’s Badger Biography series which target 4th-6th grade readers. The first book, Mai Ya’s Long Journey, was published in 2005. It deals with the resettlement of a young Hmong girl from a refugee camp in Thailand to a Madison, Wisconsin school. It was listed in the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Children’s Book Center’s 2006 publication “Choices” and was awarded 1st place for the Children’s/Juvenile non-fictions literature by both The Council for Wisconsin Writers and the Midwest Independent Publishers Association. It was also chosen to be part of the “Read on Wisconsin” literacy program in 2007.

My latest book, published in 2010 is entitled, Gaylord Nelson: Champion for Our Earth. It deals with the early life of Gaylord Nelson in his hometown of Clear Lake, Wisconsin and follows him into his political life as governor/senator of the state and later as US Senator and founder of Earth Day.

As a former teacher of English, I am eager to speak to children about literature and have spoken in many schools around the state regarding the books I have listed above. I have been privileged to speak to children at the State Capitol and the Governor’s residence.

I have PowerPoint presentations that include photos from both books. Often a picture does say 1000 words. I also do readings from the book and have an interactive question period with the kids regarding the book or the writing process.

I am located in Madison, Wisconsin.
