FICTION GUIDELINES

Short stories are like sushi. Sometimes, they make delicious appetizers. Other times, they’re a full course on their own. For all discerning tastes, Goldfish Grimm aims to please. Everything is on the table, so serve up your best. From hard sf and space opera stories to fairy tales and medieval yarns, we’ll consider it all.

Don’t be afraid to take risks and show us something new. Cursing, sex, and violence will not offend us. Just make sure it has a point, okay?

Goldfish Grimm’s Spicy Fiction Sushi wants fantasy and science fiction stories ranging from 100-7500-words. Each month we’ll be accepting two stories: one 1,000-words or less, one 1,001-words or more. Stories that fall around the 1,500-word mark will be published as flash or as the longer story based on the editor’s judgment and the overall theme of the issue. Preferred length for longer stories is somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 words. We don’t accept simultaneous or multiple submissions.

We claim first world electronic rights, exclusive for 90 days after publication, and non-exclusive anthology rights.

Note: Goldfish Grimm will not publish erotica, fan fiction, or hyper-realistic depictions of gratuitous sex and violence that have no bearing on the plot. We do not accept poetry at this time.

PAYMENTS

Goldfish Grimm is a token-paying market: $10 for flash fiction; $25 for longer works payable by PayPal on publication. Upon publication, authors will also be the subjects of feature interviews.

RESPONSE TIME

We’re new at this, so bear with us. You can expect to hear from us within a couple of weeks. If we’re holding onto your story for consideration, we’ll likely drop you a note. If you haven’t heard from us within 30 days, feel free to query.

Most rejections will be form letters. Should we include a personal note, please don’t respond. While we appreciate the sentiment, this only adds to our inbox clutter. We hope you understand.

HOW TO SUBMIT

All submissions should be sent to GoldfishGrimmZine@gmail.com.

If sending flash, include the words, “Flash Submission: ‘Story Title,’” in the subject line. For longer stories, include, “Story Submission: ‘Story Title,’” in the subject line.

For all submissions, include your name, email address, story title, word count, and a list of your best publication credits in the body of the email. Don’t worry if you don’t have any credits, we’re all about finding new talent here at Goldfish Grimm.

Attach your story to the email as .DOC or .RTF file. Use standard manuscript format with the following exceptions:

  • Single-spaced
  • Do NOT indent paragraphs.
  • Include a double line break between paragraphs.
This way, the stories will be ready for web publication.
