Where does curly hair come from?

Your hair follicle (where your hair grows out of) dictates your curl or lack thereof. Science - apparently there is no getting away from it.

Tucked inside the bottom of a hair follicle is a bulb that hooks at the ends. The stronger the curve on the hook, the curlier your hair will grow. There is no fighting it - it is what it is.

The hair cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft made up of dead cells that protect the inner structure of the hair and gives hair strength. It looks very much like overlapping layers of roof shingles. The straighter the hair the flatter the cuticle scales will lay. The flattened cuticle scales gives hair its smoothness. Curly and kinky hair curve like a helix, the scales become backed up on each other, they do not lie down but stay raised and opened.  The raised scales makes the hair feel and look rough.

Take a single hair, glide your finger tips (pointer finger and thumb) up the shaft from tip to root.  Notice you’ll feel bumps on the way up or none at all.  How many bumps you feel and how prominent they are will depend on your hair texture.  The more pronounced the bumps you feel the rougher your hair texture. 

Hair Cuticles:  The cuticle scales of Kinky, Curly and  Straight hair. 

When the cuticle is lying flat or closed it allows light to be reflected off the surface giving hair a natural sheen. Since kinky and curly hair grows in a curvaceous manner, the cuticle scales are less likely to lie flat.  The cuticle scales stays raised and opened, there is no surface for the light to reflect off of, the light goes through the hair, which makes it more difficult to reflect any light or maintain shine.

Sebum Protection™ actually flattens the cuticle scales on kinky hair textures so the hair shaft becomes smoother.   A smoother hair shaft will allow the kinky hair to look and feel smoother as it does in other hair textures that have naturally flat hair cuticles. Smoother, flatter cuticle layer is the reason why curly hair textures look and feel smooth, so physically changing the outer layer of the kinky hair will also leads to it being more smooth.  Kinky hair will also begin to reflect light and shine the way other hair textures do.

Any natural water system contain chlorine which can be drying to the skin and hair.  Kinky hair can absorb 3 times as much water as smoother hair textures.  This is why kinky hair textures can be under a shower and still not look wet.  Straighter hair textures actually look wet when under a shower because water stays outside on the hair shaft where it can be seen.  Kinky hair not only absorbs light, as discussed above, and water but it absorbs a lot more pollutants from the air, drying agents and chemicals from everyday grooming  hair products.  This causes hair to be easily susceptible to drying out.  Dry hair leads to damaged hair, which begins to break and shed faster than it grows.  This way length is difficult to achieve.  

Sebum Protection™ closes the cuticle layer so no chemicals, drying agents or humidity can get into the hair.  In addition it also helps retain hair natural moisture within the hair shaft.  Opened scales on the cuticle layer enables moisture to escape from the hair quickly leaving it defenseless against breakage.

Another reason kinky hair is dry is because it is lacking sebum.  Sebum is a natural wax secreted from the scalp of human beings and most mammals.  It acts as a conditioner to moisturize the hair and protect it from breakage and shedding.  It glides from the scalp and on to the hair shaft then makes its way down to the tip of the hair.  On straight hair sebum quickly slides down covering the entire hair shaft in hrs or a day. Which is why this type of hair is washed every day. For curly hair it can swivel down the shaft but takes way longer because of the curves, the more curly the hair the longer it takes the wax to get on to the shaft and the longer it takes to glide to the tip.  For kinky hair the ride is a bumpy one sebum has a very difficult time gliding down the hair shaft. In fact it hardly gets the chance to leave the root at all.  Which is why oils have to be applied, to do the job that the sebum is unable to do.  This is also why kinky hair cannot be washed every day.  There is no sebum on it shaft to protect it from harsh soaps and the natural drying agents in our water system.  So sebum gives the hair a natural shine and protects it while grooming. 

So Sebum Protection’s™ patent pending formula is a Sebum like formula.  That protects and moisturizes the hair.  Therefore it shines more, and breaks less.  The thick formula coats the cuticle flattens and forms a water proof barrier on the hair shaft to keep drying agents out and moisture in.  Hair shaft is not 100% less permeable.

These are the characteristics of smoother hair textures such as curly hair and wavy hair.  The texture change actually comes as a result of the hair being physically changed.  Therefore Sebum Protection™ does no chemical change to the hair, it is not a chemical. When the hair is washed with shampoo and warm water the formula is washed away and the hair’s natural texture comes back.  But with regular and continued use the hair will become more smooth and keep its new smoother characteristics even when the product is washed away. The Structure of Hair

The outer layer (cuticle) consists of several layers of overlapping cells – just like roof tiles. It is especially important for the health and shine of hair. The smoother the outer cells lie on each other, the more your hair shines. CAUCASIAN HAIR

Caucasian hair is more oval in shape. The more oval the hair, the more likely it is to be wavy. The more round the hair, the more likely it is to be straight. The cuticles on Caucasoid hair tend to lay flat, allowing the hair to retain moisture, reflect light and shine.

ASIAN HAIR

The hair of Asians is almost perfectly round resulting in bone straight hair. The cuticles lay flat, reflects light, is very strong and holds moisture.

CURLY HAIR

The hair cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft made up of dead cells that protect the inner structure of the hair and give hair strength. It looks very much like overlapping layers of roof shingles. When the cuticle is lying flat or closed it allows light to be reflected off the surface giving hair a natural sheen. Since curly hair grows in a curvaceous manner, the cuticle is less likely to lie flat, which makes it more difficult to reflect light and maintain shine. Think of curving a shingled roof – the shingles begin to separate and open up.

An open cuticle also causes moisture to escape from the inner structure of the hair, causing hair to become dryer and coarser in feeling. A closed cuticle is a happy cuticle The cuticle layers point toward the end of the hair shaft. They cannot be seen by the naked eye but they can be felt. If you slide your fingers along a hair from the end towards the scalp, the hair will feel sticky or rough—you are sliding your fingers against the open cuticle.

KINKY HAIR

Nappy or kinky African hair is almost flat or ribbon like in shape, twisting, turning, bending and zig zagging as it grows. At every twist and turn, the hair tends to be thinner and therefore susceptible to breakage at each of these points along the hair shaft. Because of its shape, the cuticles on nappy hair tend to be raised, and do not lay flat against the hair shaft. As a result, nappy hair absorbs light and does not reflect it. Hence, nappy hair does not shine. Raised cuticles also act like opened doors, causing nappy hair to be very porous. It will suck up moisture like a sponge but will also have a hard time retaining it; hence, nappy hair is inherently dry. Raised cuticles also causes nappy hair to feel coarse to the touch, rub and catch easily on one another leading tangles, knots and even more susceptible to damage and breakage even if it is properly cared for. Relaxing doesn’t solve the problem, chemicals on kinky hair leads to another set of problems.  Including chemically induced breakage and dryness.  Kinky hair can do what other hair’s can’t like stand straight up into an afro.  It can be molded into unique hair dos such as braids and twist.  It holds tightly and firmly into place for a long time.  Styles can stay neat without moving.  These are some of the perks enjoyed by those with kinky hair. 

Perms, relaxers, and coloring processes all require the cuticle to first be opened via application of an alkaline solution. This allows the chemicals to access the interior of the hair shaft in order to make permanent changes to the structure of the proteins that are the building blocks of the hair. All of these processes are capable of doing permanent damage to the cuticle layer. This damage builds up with repeat use of the chemical process.
