His legal name is Ashante. That is what is on his birth certificate and yes he was born in America. Before Ashanti the singer became popular his parents began using the spelling Ashanti because they thought it more masculine. It does not seem to matter though since he is best known today as the Mad Violinist. As a music producer and instrumentalist few confuse him with the well-known female artist Ashanti. Identifying with his band, Symphony Crack, he constantly seeks to define himself through his work.
According to Ashanti and his twin brother Amani, the band name Symphony Crack was created while they were brainstorming during a road trip.
