JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - At the USA 15K Championships hosted by the 35th Gate River Run, Mo Trafeh (Duarte, Calif.) and Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (Rome, Ga.) dominated the men's and women's fields Saturday morning.
Trafeh ran 43 minutes, 23 seconds to win his third straight USA 15K title, while Cherobon-Bawcom clocked 49:41 to win her first 15K crown. The national championships were hosted for the 19th time by the Gate River Run, the country's largest 15K with more than 16,300 finishers. In addition to the $60,000 individual prize structure, the event featured a gender competition in the form of a $5000 Equalizer Bonus as well as a $20,000 team competition, the TenBroeck Cup.
With unusual clouds and wind, the U.S. professional women started at 8:23am with the men and the rest of the field following 7 minutes later. Cherobon-Bawcom, 33, started quickly, but by the first mile (5:15) a pack of seven had separated themselves from the field. Along with Cherobon-Bawcom, Molly Huddle (Providence, R.I.), Lindsey Scherf (Raleigh, N.C.), Maegan Krifchin (Ithaca, N.Y.), Clara Grandt (Morgantown, W.V.), Alisha Williams (Boulder, Colo.) and Adriana Nelson (Boulder, Colo.) bucking the wind together.

spacer Little Rock, Ark. – For the fourth year in a row, Leah Thorvilson is the female winner of the Little Rock Marathon with a personal best time of 2:37:26. The 33-year-old Little Rock native said, “this is such a special day. I am just so proud.”

Thorvilson, who failed to make the Olympic team this year, said she hopes she can still represent the United States at the World Games or the Pan Am Games. “I am so inspired by the women on the Olympic Team. I’m a little older, and I’ve never run this fast before. I think I’m going to keep chasing it."

Biwott, Trana win ½ marathon; sold-out 3rd edition welcomes 22,000-plus under perfect running conditions

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Among the more than 22,000 runners in the 3rd Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon & ½ Marathon benefiting the American Cancer Society, it was former University of Oregon standout Shadrack Biwott who stood out amongst the crowd on Sunday morning.

Running solo along historic St. Charles Avenue, the 27-year-old Biwott was losing steam in the men's half marathon. He had maintained a dominant lead since the start, but had no one to push him for much of the race.

As he reversed direction on St. Charles Avenue, the other side of the street was lined with thousands of runners who spotted Biwott and began to cheer loudly for him--cheering that would continue for well over a mile.

[From modest start in 1973, Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run has become the Runner’s Rite of Spring® in our nation’s capital, attracting participants from all 50 states and five countries to this year’s event.

Washington, DC: Bethesda, Maryland runner Ben Beach was one of 141 finishers in the inaugural Cherry Blossom Run in 1973. He has since completed all 39 editions of the race, and is on track to bring his total Cherry Blossom racing miles to 400 when he lines up on the starting line of the 40th running of the event on April 1, 2012. Who better to offer a bit of perspective on what the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and 5K Run-Walk means to the expected 15,000 participants in this year’s events?

Cherobon-Bawcom Takes Fifth at Olympic Marathon Trials

spacer By now I suspect everyone in the world of running knows that my top three picks did indeed make the marathon team for the 2012 London Olympic Games. While 223 women qualified to run the trials, only 183 started on a perfect morning in Houston, TX, and 151 finished. After a pedestrian first couple of miles, the pack was down to 10 women at four miles as the pace picked up. By mile 13 the pack was down to six and by mile 16 there were four remaining. After taking a slight lead at mile 22, Amy Hastings (2:27:17) faded slightly as Kara Goucher (2:26:06), Desiree Davila (2:25:55) and eventual winner Shalane Flanagan (2:25:38) took turns leading until the final mile. Flanagan set a trials record as the first four finishers broke the record.

Modest marathon growth in the U.S. last year, but plenty of record highs including total finishers for the classic 26.2 mile distance

Running USA wire
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Over the past decade, marathons in the U.S. and worldwide have been part of the Second Running Boom's unprecedented upward trend line, and 2011 was another year of growth in U.S. marathons with an estimated record 518,000 finishers or a 2.2% increase from 2010, a modest increase compared to recent years (9.9% in 2009 and 8.6% in 2010). See U.S. marathon finisher table further below.

Part of the slowing growth for the 26.2 mile distance may be attributed to the explosive growth of the half-marathon over the past 5 years in the U.S. as runners either have moved down from their first or second marathon to the half-marathon or see the half-marathon as a more manageable, but as challenging distance for their time and aspirations. In addition, a majority of large marathons have entrant caps which - due to the Rule of Large Numbers - will impact the overall percent growth, particularly if non-capped and debut marathons don't attract a larger number of entrants compared to past years.

Why Do You Run?

Date:

By Bryan Graydon

spacer Why do you run? How many times have you been asked that one? When I am out to dinner with friends on a Saturday evening and pass on that second beer because I have to run in the morning, they look at me funny and ask, “Why do you run?” When I tell people I go to bed at 9:00pm so I can get up at 3:15am to run, I always get asked, “Why do you run?” I often think of the self-induced torture I put myself through in those wee hours of the morning and I look in the mirror and ask, “Why do you run?”

I have often reflected on this question and it’s a simple answer. One of the reasons is a three letter word that sometimes has a negative stigma attached to it, but we all possess it to some degree and that is ego. I like being able to say that I run marathons, which is something that less than 2% of the world’s population will ever do. Is it wrong that part of the reason I run is for egotistical gratification? Probably a little, but we will just make that our little secret.
