Adult neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome)
Neurodevelopmental disorders are problems that affect local brain development from birth. They included Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism spectrum Disorders (ASD which includes Asperger’s syndrome), Dyslexia (difficulty reading and writing), Dyscalculia (difficulty with numbers) and Dyspraxia (problems with coordination). These problems first appear during childhood but are not always recognized and treated. Neurodevelopmental disorders may improve with age but often persist into adulthood and can cause problems with social relationships and work, particularly in a person who also has other mental health problems, like anxiety, depression or psychosis. Lifestyle adjustments, behavioural and talking treatments as well as medications can all have a place in helping. Adult NHS Neurodevelopmental clinics are a fairly recent development for all sorts of reasons and those providing the medical service are working with a very limited budget. This means that sometimes a test or specific help may not be readily available. It is important to bring this to the attention of fund holders and service providers.
Adult neurodevelopmental disorders research
We are working to identify the needs of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as to improve diagnosis and management of these conditions. We are also researching to improve understanding of the causes of these disorders and how they may relate to each other and to other mental health problems such as anxiety, mood disorders and psychosis.
