Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; also known as Hyperkinetic disorder in the UK and Europe) is a childhood onset disorder and is one of the most common reasons why children are referred and seen by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Individuals with ADHD show excessive levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that cause problems at school, with peers and family relationships. Both medication and behavioural treatments can be helpful. ADHD may run in families and, although there is much that remains to be learnt, we know that both genes and environmental factors influence the development of ADHD.

ADHD research
Our research team investigates the causes and risk factors leading to ADHD. This includes genes and various environmental factors such as family relationships, prenatal adversity or family history of illness. We are particularly interested in trying to understand how the symptoms of ADHD are influenced by different genes and other factors. Our research group is world renowned and more than 1000 families with children have ADHD have participated in our studies. It is vitally important that we see as many people as possible with ADHD because everyone’s experience is different. If you would like to know more about our research or a re interested in helping with it, please follow the link below.
