O&O Defrag Professional 14

O&O Defrag is an excellent example of top notch disk defragmenter software that offers a multitude of features and a streamlined interface. Its ease of use is almost second to none while its ability to defrag heavily fragmented hard drives is very good. While O&O Defrag is a complete solution for many defragmentation needs, it didn’t quite beat out the highest ranked entry in this category, but still managed to land our TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award. While it may lack features found in the higher ranked entries in this category, it does offer a relatively easier way to simply defragment a hard drive without dealing with a complex set of options.

Using O&O Defrag was not only easy but intuitive as well. It also offered several novel features such as the ability to examine individual clusters, create reports and a jobs creation feature. While it does have automatic background mode, O&O Defrag tended to focus more on its manual defragmentation ability.

Upon launching O&O Defrag, all of a computer’s hard drives are shown and are analyzed for possible problems. Each drive can be examined for disk errors as well as be defragmented manually. O&O Defrag can actually do more than one drive at a time. During testing of O&O Defrag, we were able to simultaneously defragment an external hard drive as well as a laptop’s main hard drive. Both were defragmented with very fast response times on each drive’s cluster maps.

One major difference that O&O Defrag has from other similar programs is that it “seemed” to have a under the hood engine that ran pretty much by itself. While a user could change some of O&O Defrag’s settings and setup special defragmentation sessions, much of the program’s processes ran hidden in the background. This makes O&O Defrag much better suited for casual or home users than system administrators that might require more extensive controls. Other disk defragmenter software sometimes use a more complicated interface which be very non-intuitive.

Features:

O&O Defrag has a feature set that is aimed at making the defragmentation process both relatively easy and fast. While it may not have the multitude of features that other defragmentation programs offer, it does allow a user to set up scheduled sessions that can run unattended or even offline. Another feature is O&O Defrag’s ability to run in power saving mode when implemented on a laptop or netbook. One feature that was time saving was a built in disk error checker which worked quickly to find common disk errors.

Several unique features set O&O Defrag apart from others. One is its power save mode which pauses any automatic session on a laptop or netbook when they are run on battery power. Another feature is the ability to run scheduled sessions even when different users are logged into a system.

Other features include an excellent cluster viewing window that reveals the file contents of each disk cluster as well as a comprehensive web based reporting tool for each defragmentation session performed.

A few new features that come with the current version of this software include optimized control of zoning, O&O ActivityMonitor for managing resources and advanced management of reports. O&O ActivityMonitor constantly monitors the system load and determines whether jobs and automatic optimization may occur at a specific time. This feature takes the strain of figuring out when your system needs to be optimized out of your hands and makes it an optimized, effortless process. O&O Defrag is also capable of optimizing your hard drive when it reaches a certain level of defragmentation.

Performance:

The high performance speed of O&O Defrag was very noticeable during its defragmentation sessions. Furthermore, O&O Defrag was highly responsive and had a low system footprint during its operations. Among all the disk defragmenter software reviewed, O&O Defrag was one of the fastest performers. It was able to defrag a heavily fragmented hard drive in a fairly fast time period without interruptions. The program also performed well even with other programs opened such as a web browser. Even when working on multiple hard drives the program was a fast performer without any noticeable slowdown and the disk analysis process was fast and accurate. A graphical report was quickly produced after each drive is analyzed for fragmentation.

During the automatic operation of O&O Defrag, there was little discernable performance loss. The program was able to monitor and run defragmentation routines without interference from other programs or a background anti-virus program.

During testing the program was very fast and took up very little resources. During each defragmentation mode there was no discernable loss in general system performance. It was even possible to run several programs while a defragmentation session was being conducted.

Disk Optimization:

The disk defragmentation process offered by O&O Defrag is very complete and accurate. The reports detail actual files that are fragmented along with graphical maps that show all of a drive’s clusters during the defragmentation process. After each session a well-designed map shows each type of file on a drive that has been optimized and defragmented. Three different modes of defragmentation are offered: optimize, optimize-quick, and optimize-complete. Each mode offered a different level of defragmentation. During testing, optimize and optimize-quick modes were less comprehensive but faster than the optimize-complete mode.

One feature that separates the program from other disk defragmenter software is “ActivityGuard” which keeps the program from being interrupted during a defragmentation session. This feature ensures that no external program will interfere or stop the program while it is active.

In automatic mode, the program chooses which mode to use and runs unattended in the background. The program can be configured to run during scheduled time periods without any further interaction from the user.
