The Tokyo Sky Tree will open its doors to tourists on May 22, 2012. If you’re planning on visiting it and taking an elevator ride to the observation deck, be warned: it will be really expensive.

One adult ticket to the top observation deck will cost 3,000 yen (about $37).

Here’s how it compares to other observation decks:

    • Burj Khalifa – about 2,200 yen (if purchased in advance for a specific date and time – otherwise its about 8,800 yen)
    • Guangzhou TV Tower – about 1,800 yen
    • Eiffel Tower – about 1,500 yen
    • Tokyo Tower – 1,420 yen

Hell with that. They should have shitamachi prices for its shitamachi location.

There’s only so many people that can go up there in a day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re at full capacity for quite a while even charging 3000 yen. Got to make those construction costs back somehow.

Yes, It’s good to read some simple, intelligent commentary. One old fart to another.

The largest metropolis in the world & arguably one of the wealthiest, with the tallest structure in the world & arguably one of the most expensive ever built, charging ¥3,000 (max.) is to be expected.

A calculated business decision, which I’m sure will have more than enough willing supporters – paying public.

While I agree with your main point, “Tokyo” is only the world’s largest metropolis if you count all the areas around it that are not Tokyo.  There are only 8.9 million people in the 23 wards of Tokyo, which is just slightly greater than New York.  Some places say “34 million”, which would be a full quarter of Japan’s population!  I don’t think the folks living in Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures consider themselves “part of Tokyo”.  If we’re going to go there then all of Long Island and New Jersey, western Connecticut, eastern Pennsylvania and everything north to Albany should be called “New York City”.

Yes you are correct – if one counts all the non-Tokyo areas.

However the expression, The Metropolis of Tokyo, also referred to as Greater Tokyo, is commonly accepted as including the surrounding areas you mentioned, hence affording it the status of the largest metropolis in the world.

Technically the City of Tokyo as you described with it’s 23 wards is much smaller.

One could complicate things further by using the expression Megalopolis of Tokyo, in which case I believe there are other greater regions.

I’m just going to throw out the word ‘conurbation’ and let you guys play with it.

However you choose to dice it though, Tokyo’s massive.

I guess I am used to it:
      CN Tower
      - Lookout + observation -  CA$23 ~ 1,892 yen
      - Lookout + observation + skypod – CA$29  ~ 2,386 yen

      (prices based on Google)

There are some other goodies that can make the price go up even further, but I don’t think many people buy those.
That said, the rotating restaurant is pretty good as far as food goes, and is not the most expensive place in town. It does give you the Lookout and observation access without paying on top of your meal. I guess it just goes to show you, even though it is the tallest free standing structure in North America, it’s never been that popular but the admission is still pretty pricey.

The worst thing about the CN Tower is that it’s in Toronto.  Yes, I was a Torontonian.  No, don’t tell me to leave if I don’t like it: I’m in Tokyo, suckers.

About 1,800 JPY for the Guangzhou TV Tower – I wonder, is that “Chinese tourist price” or “foreign tourist price”?  When I was studying in university in China, everything touristy had two prices on it, depending on whether you were a foreigner or not.  And I do mean everything: admission fees, airfares, train tickets, items at the gift shops, anything bought at the night markets… places that had menus in both Chinese and English would have different prices on them for the same thing!

So compared to 8,800 for the Burj Khalifa it’s not really that expensive is it?

Still, I’m going to bring this up next time a Japanese person complains about prices in England spacer

      • rockrode

They should have whatever price the market will pay. Nobody has to go up there.

      • rockrode

its economics not rocket science. Not gonna grouch over this its the economy stupid as they  say!  You can not afford 3000 yen geeze man I feel sorry for you OMG we are that poor unbelievable. The Chinese have the money and darn well can spend it and live it large.  3000 yen get a decent paying wage and live instead of complaining.

      • rockrode

you got the cash, then what’s the matter with you man lol As long as you get what you pay for and plus it helps the local economy

        • Vagante

OK… in simple language for the challenged: Tokyo Sky Tree should charge whatever price they think the market will pay. At present, they think ¥3,000 is OK. My guess is that they will not be short of visitors at that price. Nobody is forced to visit the Sky Tree or go up it.

Nobody is complaining. It helps to read a comment before you reply to it.

Don’t worry, Gonta, every topic attracts somebody who knows the answer to everything but isn’t too skillful at articulating it.
