The Internet is a wonderful, magical thing. But it took from us something that we will never get back. No, not our innocence. Not the carefree whimsy of yesteryear, before mobile technology unleashed an epidemic of obsessive-compulsive email checking and Twitteritis. No, not that. Something much greater. I am talking of course, about the mixtape.
It wasn’t just music, it was an art. There was math involved. You had to push more than one button at the same time. There was the thrill of finding the perfect song to fill the perfect space, and the shame of the unintentionally abbreviated last tune. But what really made mixtapes special was that they were almost always made with a perceptible intention.
Despite a certain nostalgia for the old-school, it is clearly for the best that music technology has come this far. With a fierce passion for independent art and queer visibility, Homoground is using the Internet to undermine the mainstream, reinvent the modern mixtape, and lend a renewed sense of purpose to the music industry at large.
