Celebrating International Women’s Day

Yesterday, Futures Without Violence celebrated International Women’s Day by attending the 2012 International Women of Courage Awards Ceremony. First Lady Michelle Obama joined Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer to present the honor to ten inspirational women from around the world. Special guests included Ms. Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Ms. Tawakkol Karman of Libya, two of the three women 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates who advocated for women’s equality and empowerment.

The Secretary of State’s Award for International Women of Courage “recognizes women around the globe who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women's rights and empowerment, often at great personal risk.”

Sheriff Mirkarimi Should Resign

March 12, 2012, San Francisco

The protracted legal battle over misdemeanor charges against San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi for domestic violence, child endangerment, and witness tampering has been resolved legally. During the past 30 years, the community and justice system worked hard to create a strong meaningful response to allegations of domestic violence, and this case demonstrated that the system works. What happens next will depend on how the community responds beyond its legal system, and how the individuals involved in the incident obtain assistance to move on with their lives.

As a criminal defendant, Mirkarimi was entitled to the robust defense of his attorneys. As an elected law enforcement executive sanctioned for criminal conduct in the treatment of his family, he should resign. And the Mayor should encourage Mirkarimi’s resignation to the point of seeking his removal if necessary.

Gender-based Violence Key Outcome of USAID Gender Policy

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) released a new policy on gender equality and female empowerment this week. Futures Without Violence is thrilled to report that the reduction of gender-based violence is one of three key outcomes outlined in the policy, along with reduction in gender disparity and enhancement of women’s capacity.

Futures Founder and President, Esta Soler, applauded the policy, saying, “The new gender policy truly is a game-changer. Now, in every country where the USAID works, gender-based violence will be measured and addressed as part of our development and humanitarian work.” [more...]
