Submitting Content

EJ has been the premier U.S. technical journal for structural steel construction since its beginnings in 1964. EJ is tracked by ThomsonReuters/ISI Journal Citation Reports as "Engineering Journal-American Institute of Steel Construction."

The types of content published in EJ are:

    • Articles: Technical content presenting completed research and analysis or innovative practical design concepts or methodologies. Articles generally have between 3000 and 10,000 words.
    • Technical Notes: A technical note presents practical information, preliminary research results, or innovative design techniques. Technical notes generally have fewer than 3000 words.
    • Discussions: Reader commentary on technical points in previously published EJ content.
    • Closures: Author responses to reader comments provided in Discussions, published concurrently with the relevant Discussion piece.

You should receive an e-mail acknowledgment of your submittal in about one week. The initial review process takes approximately 60 to 90 days. Submittals are reviewed by three to four anonymous reviewers as well as the Engineering Journal Review Board, comprised of AISC technical staff. The review board decision will be accompanied by reviewer comments. For initial submittals, send us a Microsoft Word format accompanied by a PDF file for checking purposes. All submittals must contain an abstract. Final submittals must be in Microsoft Word format with PDF, JPG, or TIFF figures. Microsoft Excel files are acceptable for large tables.

The guidelines here contain some tips for producing an acceptable manuscript. The most common issues we have are:

    • not following AISC reference format
    • footnotes and endnotes: EJ does not use them
    • missing figure and table references
    • improperly formatted equations: equations must be created using the MathType program.

Accepted articles will be edited for technical style and professionally typeset prior to publication. Figures and photographs are produced in color.

Questions about submitting content may be directed to the Keith Grubb, Editor, at grubb@aisc.org.
