As wine consumers from a wine trade perspective, we almost always note the name of the winery, the varietal and – if we wake up inspired on that particular day – the vintage – but what makes a winery stand up and be counted and makes us remember them for the wine and the brand? Mark its self out by thinking a little differently? Dare I say being innovative but never compromising on quality?

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Chile this year (I know, hard job, poor you, don’t know how you do it?!…) and I dropped in on Viña Montes . It goes without saying that the wines from Montes are true reflections of the transversal valleys, coastal mountain ranges and a diverse climate from a country that is as beautiful as it is breathtaking. It’s clear to see how these outstanding producers are able to produce premium wines of such unique and alluring quality when working with such a fantastic and inspiring landscape. Don’t get me wrong, the scenery can be intimidating – the imposing Andes mountains loom in the centre of the landscape, a patchwork of gray and deep violet hues.  But the wines, well, they sing and so do Montes; to their barrels! By playing the Gregorian chants to the ageing wines as they rest in the cellars at their Apalta winery, Montes believe  the music will vibrate the barrels and help with their maturation in a unique and inspiring way.

The wines produced are indeed mellow, soft, relaxed and well rounded, so they must be on to something…  Don’t get me wrong; ever the sceptic I’m tempted to slip a Nirvana CD on and see if we get a vintage of angst but I highly doubt it. It’s not just down to the music: the  passion, dedication and promise to produce wines that are not just a labour of time but a labour of love, means Viña Montes do produce wines that are truly Worthy of Note, music or no music. Now I wonder if the Montes team will let me loose with a spot of karaoke in the cellar..?
