Welcome to Our Capital - Carson City

On October 31, 1864, Nevada became the 36th State of the Union. This was the time of the Civil War and thus the state motto of "Battle Born". The Union needed the minerals that are abundant in this state. Beginning in 1857, several names were used to refer to this area, ie: Sierra Nevada Territory, Washoe Territory, Carson Territory, Eastern Slope, Humboldt, Esmeralda, Sierra Plata, Oro Plata and Bullion; but in 1864 she emerged as "Nevada" a Spanish word meaning snow-covered. Nevada is also known as the "Silver State" and the "Sagebrush State".
