NEastPhilly.com is the online home of Northeast Philadelphia. Launched in November 2008, NEastPhilly is maintained by a collection of local residents who live and breathe Northeast Philadelphia. The site offers daily news, analysis, multimedia, columns and commentary on everything that interests the proud, working-class neighborhoods of The NEast. NEastPhilly.com is the only place for daily news exclusively about the Northeast.

WHAT WE’RE ABOUT
NEastPhilly focuses on the heart and soul of Philadelphia – the Northeast. Our city’s hardworking middle-class people need their own source for daily news about their community. On NEastPhilly, every story, profile and photo is directly related to Northeast Philadelphia and the people who live and work here.
NEast Philly covers roughly zip codes 19111, 19114, 19115, 19116, 19124, 19135, 19136, 19149, 19152 and 19154. According to U.S. Census data, the population in these 10 zip codes and 40+ neighborhoods is about 400,000.
The idea for NEastPhilly started when founder Shannon McDonald began her journalism career at Temple University in 2005. Now a fully operational site, NEastPhilly delivers daily news to Northeast Philadelphia – with multiple stories a day and feedback from readers.

NEast Magazine is the plan to bring NEastPhilly.com to life in a glossy print magazine.. Here on NEastPhilly.com, you’ll be able to get daily online content for free, and see previews of every issue of NEast magaine, but the full-length stories, trend-reporting and detailed profiles will be featured exclusively in NEast magazine, which will be available four times a year. Locations and further details to follow as we near our launch.

Shannon McDonald, Executive Editor – Shannon began her life in the Northeast in a small Wissinoming home, grew up in there and now lives in Holme Circle. She launched NEastPhilly.com in Fall 2008, after many years of feeling Northeast Philadelphia was underserved by the rest of the city. After working with various other Philadelphia publications, she decided the best way to get attention for the Northeast is to create it herself. Shannon’s favorite NEast memory is walking to Carmen’s Water Ice on Harbison Avenue on summer nights in Wissinoming. See her personal site here.
Stacey McCarthy, Columnist – Stacey, who grew up in Morrell Park and now lives in Parkwood, writes Real NEastate, a weekly column appearing Wednesdays in which she answers questions about Northeast housing markets. She is a licensed PA Realtor with the McCarthy Group of Keller Williams Real Estate. Stacey lives with her husband, “Big Joe,” and their 4-year-old son.
Michael Feeney, Writer — Michael grew up in Mayfair directly behind the Mayfair Diner on Tudor St. Though he no longer lives in the neighborhood, he often travels back there and still feels like it is his home. A graduate of Archbishop Ryan, he currently lives outside the city in North Wales. He still feels strongly that the Northeast should be given its proper respect when put up against the rest of the city, referring it to friends as “the first semi-suburb when heading North from Center City.” He is currently a Senior at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA, majoring in print and video communications. A highlight of his life in Mayfair is eating lunch a mere twenty feet from his house at the same time as President Bill Clinton in 1996 during his run for a second term.
Christopher Wink, Web Editor -- Christopher handles the web and design work for NEast, in addition to often covering the Frankford and Northwood communities. He is a co-founder of publishing company Technically Media and its popular local technology news site Technically Philly. Christopher, whose first experience with the NEast was a year living in Frankford, says he appreciates the varied cultures of the Northeast, distinct in a city full of them. Jim Heisler, Columnist –- Jim grew up in Tacony and now lives in Upper Holmesburg with his wife Paula and three children – Liam, Addison and Gavin. Jim writes Your Personal CFO, a bi-weekly column appearing on Tuesdays where he addresses a variety of personal finance issues. Jim is a Certified Financial Planner professional and is president of Family Wealth Services, LLC, a financial planning and investment management firm located at 8725 Frankford Ave. in Holmesburg. Jim is a graduate of Central High School and holds bachelors and masters degrees in finance from La Salle University. He holds Series 7, 66, 63 and 24 securities licenses in addition to PA and NJ Life/Health and Property Casualty licenses. Jim is also a part-time faculty member at Holy Family University.
Stephen Wilson, Columnist – Steve grew up in the Far Northeast and attended Archbishop Ryan High School. He now works for a public relations firm in northern New Jersey but still likes to return to the Northeast every few weeks to visit family and friends. Steve has never considered himself a townie (and, to be perfectly honest, has had some pretty great experiences in N.J.), but he cannot help but feeling like he misses the place that provided him with so many great memories, a sentiment he chronicles monthly in Missing the Northeast.
G. E. Reutter, Contributor – G.E. adopted the Northeast as his home after stints living in the suburbs. He has resided in Wissinoming, Tacony and now in Fox Chase. He served for 25 years with the railroad police and is a veteran of political wars of the 41st ward for more than a decade in the ’80s and ’90s. He is a prolific poet and author; eight of his collections have been published, and his work has appeared in small print and electronic journals across the globe. In 2007 he founded The Fox Chase Reading Series and The Fox Chase Review. He is a regular contributor to NEast Philly and an occasional commentator at Speak Without Interruption. He raised his daughter Katie in the Northeast where she graduated from Archbishop Ryan and Philadelphia University.
Elsie Stevens, Contributor — Elsie grew up in North Philadelphia but after marriage to her husband Bob, he carried her over the threshold of their Holme Circle home where they have remained for four decades, raising their daughter, Michele, a graduate of Holy Family University. Although now retired, Elsie worked in the city’s Mayor’s office during three different administrations, for a dean at Temple University, and finally at a financial investment firm. Not one to stay home in a rocking chair, she is involved with Northeast groups such as the 8th Police District Advisory Council, Holme Circle Civic Association, Friends of Lower Dublin Academy and Friends of Holmesburg Library. While appreciating the history of its past and working for its future, she enjoys the present in Northeast Philly by biking and hiking often with her two grandsons in Pennypack Park.

NEastPhilly is looking for contributors and volunteers!
You don’t have to be an experienced writer to contribute to the site. We want active, involved residents with a passion for their neighborhood. Are you a block captain? A stay-at-home parent with active kids? Someone who loves to socialize and try new things? Do you like taking photos of things you see in your daily routine? NEast Philly is a place for people to read about and experience the real Northeast Philadelphia.
Tell us about your block party, give us details from your neighborhood’s civic meeting or write a guest column about an ongoing problem you see happening. This site is a place for the people of the Northeast to come together, and you can be part of that by contributing to NEast Philly.
Though we can’t pay our contributors yet, the more people who get involved, the more diverse the content on NEastPhilly.com will be.
