Respectful Conduct Clinic

Even bullies deserve dignified treatment and the chance to show they can suspend their negative conduct, at least during working hours. But coddling the bully by mandating "communications" training or "anger management" sessions is mocked by serious offenders. The Respectful Conduct Clinic is neither. Bullies know we are experts in bullying tactics and do not delve into euphemisms. Though we do not have to use the pejorative term "bully," they seem to understand they will not con us into believing they are simply misunderstood.

The individualized sessions with our professionals are conducted off-site for confidentiality purposes. Employers have the option to bring our consultants to your location, but meet the individual away from work, or send the offender to attend a residential program in Bellingham, Washington.

We do not delude ourselves into believing that offenders are rehabilitated permanently. That would involve personality change. The best Clinic result employers can hope for is restraint and cessation of hostilities against other employees. Having a policy constrains the offender's behavioral options and encourages compliance.

The CEO (or senior leader) must mandate the offender's participation, and the offender's continued employment must be made contingent on attendance and cooperation.

Our proprietary Clinic involves testing and skills evaluation to begin a self-discovery process. For identified skill deficiencies, we deliver personalized training. Cognitive barriers to non-abusive conduct lead to different strategies. Emotional deficiencies pose the greatest hurdles. There is necessarily a resetting of the emotional thermostat so that cross-situational consistency and predictability are achieved. Our licensed mental health counselor is a member of the consulting team specifically skilled in dealing with any deep-seated psychological issues that may arise.

The Clinic ends with the condition that the individual return to work and demonstrably comply with explicit behavioral standards. Consequences for non-compliance are introduced and enforced by the executive requesting the Clinic.

The Clinic is superior to either "anger management" or irrelevant skills training by including accountability and the prioritization of the organization's needs.

The Respectful Conduct Clinic requires two to five days of individualized sessions.

The Clinic is most successful when a systematic approach to preventing bullying, such as The Work Doctor Blueprint system, has been implemented and a policy is in effect to which past and future conduct can be compared.
