Typhoon Sendong’s Victims Need YOU

By Bon Ching (Post Editor) | December 18, 2011 | Filed under: Announcements, NEWS, Public Service

According to recent reports by The Philippine Red Cross, the death toll due to Typhoon Sendong, with an international name of Washi, has already reached a staggering 569 (as of 1:01 pm, December 18, 2011, Philippine time), with almost 450 people still on the missing list and many villages remaining isolated and unreached by overwhelmed disaster-response personnel.

The typhoon hit the south on Friday with Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan as the two of the hardest-hit cities. According to the Associated Press, most of the dead were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters tore through their homes from swollen rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 hours of pounding rain in the southern Mindanao region. Furthermore, forecaster Leny Ruiz said that the records show that storms that follow Washi’s track come only once in about 12 years and the complacency of the people is one of the reasons why the fatality was that so high.

Nobody saw this coming and the fact that this tragedy reminds us of our own ordeal with Ondoy way back 2009 is one reason enough to help our kababayans to face this dark tunnel of great anguish and painful death. And now that the Christmas spirit is almost palpable in the air, let us give a helping hand in the form of simple donations or even sincere and heart-felt prayers for the people who perished and for their families grieving for this great loss. This is one of the trying moments that we need to awaken the “bayanihan spirit” in each of everyone of us.

The whole of Definitely Filipino is very saddened about what happened and is expressing its heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Let us give love, compassion and hope at this very tragic time. Let this be our prayer….

I pray you’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know

Let this be our prayer
As we go our way
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your Grace
To a place where we’ll be safe
La luce che to dai

I pray we’ll find your light
Nel cuore restero
And hold it in our hearts
A ricordarchi che
When stars go out each night
L’eterna stella sei
Nella mia preghiera
Let this be our prayer
Quanta fede c’e
When shadows fill our day
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace

Give us faith so we’ll be safe.
Sognamo un mondo senza piu violenza

Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace e di fraternita

La forza che ci dai
We ask that life be kind
E’il desiderio che
And watch us from above
Ognuno trovi amore
We hope each soul will find
Intorno e dentro a se
Another soul to love

Let this be our prayer
Just like every child
Just like every child

Needs to find a place,
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
E la fede che
Hai acceso in noi
Sento che ci salvera
