When I received this correspondence from Robert Moses at the age of ten, I had already been ensconced in my interest in roads and bridges for several years. This correspondence took on additional significance two years later, in 1981, when Moses passed away at the age of 92. I collected every article from
The New York Times and Newsday profiling not only his record of accomplishment, but also the indelible imprint that he left on New York for generations to come.

In the intervening years, the passionate interest in roads and bridges took on a different form, particularly as I began driving on extended road trips in the late 1980's. It took the Internet to take my strong relationship with roads and bridges, particularly with those in the New York metropolitan area, to the next level.

In September 1996, I posted my first (non-highway related) pages on the web.  At the same time, the "first wave" of highway-related web sites, including those from David Steinberg, James Lin and Scott Oglesby, were in production. In addition, several well-produced New York-area mass transit sites, including nycsubway.org, already had an established presence. However, despite their historical significance, the highways, bridges and tunnels in the New York metropolitan area did not have a comprehensive web site.

Toward the end of 1996, I made the decision to produce a New York-area "road site," and began research from those initial (and now fading) newspaper clippings from Moses' death in 1981. This initial research was soon supplemented by visits to university libraries, state libraries and official archives. On June 1, 1997, I launched "On the Road with Steve Anderson."

The content initially covered highways in New York City and on Long Island. In late 1997, with the site re-christened "The Roads of Metro New York," the content had been expanded to highways in the lower Hudson Valley. During 1998, the content on the site expanded to "The Crossings of Metro New York" (covering the area's bridges and tunnels) and "The Exits of Metro New York."

As 1999 began, it became apparent that the site needed a unique identity, and a new single domain, nycroads.com, was obtained for "New York Area Roads, Crossings and Exits."

With the new domain and greatly expanded web space came rapid expansion into New Jersey and Connecticut. By mid-1999, nycroads.com covered the entire tri-state area.

Expansion of nycroads.com continued south on the New Jersey Turnpike into the Philadelphia area through late 1999 and early 2000.

However, with the vast amount of available information on roads and bridges in southeastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware, a new independent web site - phillyroads.com - was split off from the New York-area site on July 4, 2000. The expansion continued into Massachusetts, Rhode Island and southern New Hampshire with the July 4, 2001 of bostonroads.com.

As the body of knowledge grows on my existing sites, I am continuing to develop new sites. On January 1, 2004, I launched ratetheroads.com, a site that allows users to rate highways on safety and aesthetics from a driver's perspective. In the near future, I also plan to create sites for the Baltimore / Washington and Chicago metropolitan areas.

Over the years, the sites have garnered a vast audience, from longtime professionals and enthusiasts to schoolchildren learning about roads and bridges, and from lifelong commuters seeking the best route home to the first-time visitor seeking travel information.
