Gallery 5: Sorting Things Out,
Process-based installation by Wynde Dyer

Show runs: March 2nd to April 28th, 2012
Gallery hours: Weds-Sat, Noon-6pm, or by appointment
Artist-in-session Fridays and Saturdays, noon-6pm
Artist Talk: Wednesday, April 18th, 7pm

Wynde Dyer’s process-based installation, “Sorting Things Out,” questions the utility—or futility—of pondering the past for answers to present problems and future directions. Working from an art-therapeutic perspective, Dyer will shred 1000’s of her childhood and adolescent photos into tiny 1-inch x 1/8-inch pieces strewn out across the gallery floors. Over the course of the two-month exhibit, she will sort the shredded pieces by color value and texture gradient, using the pieces to create new works evocative of the repressed memories conjured up during the experience. The time and tedium of this process acts, for Dyer, as a physical embodiment of psychodynamic processes. On Fridays and Saturdays from 12-6 p.m. public is invited to observe the work in progress via surveillance cameras outside the gallery, or to step inside and participate actively.

Gigantic Gallery one-year anniversary show

February 20, 2012
By Richard Mavis

spacer Gigantic Gallery will be turning one year old this March! We met a lot of great people during our first year and, to celebrate our birthday, we want to celebrate them.

So the theme of our March show is the carte de visite, which were small, mass-produced pictures mounted on paper that were hugely popular around the 1860s. Baseball and superhero cards, comp cards and business cards and wallet-sized photos can all trace their ancestry to the carte de visite.

We want this show to be about the artists we met this year. We invited the artists to make as many small, personally-expressive pieces as they cared to. We hope to fill the walls.

Please come visit us during the opening on March 1st, 2012. It could be huge.

spacer Jeffrey Gabel and Jasmine Shiver have opened Let It Rain Art Gallery at 7322 N Leavitt Avenue
in the St Johns neighborhood of Portland, OR. Jasmine and Jeffrey moved to St Johns a year ago from
Longview, Washington and chose St Johns for the small town feel. While meeting many talented
and unique artists in the Portland area they realized there was no art gallery currently serving the
St Johns area and decided to invest and rehab a retail space into a vibrant art gallery.
Let It Rain is their shared vision of gallery and event space, a warm relaxing place where people
can come together with their passion for art. The Next show will be starting Feb. 24th, 2012, featuring
Leon Lowman, Jason Stewart, David D’Andrea, jewelry by Bijoux and more!

Gallery 114 is proud to present a group exhibition showcasing its newest artists. “Inside Out: Revelations From Newer Faces” will offer compelling insight into its newest members through a diversity of work and artistic intent.

The exhibit promises to be as diverse as the artists themselves. From unique perspective to method of delivery, Inside Out: Revelations From Newer Faces will deliver a spectrum of mediums and aesthetic sensibilities. Artists Diana Crites, Alana DiCicco, Erin Robinson Grant, Khanh N. Huynh MD, Mary Jo Mann, Christopher B. Mooney, and Curtis Settino will present contemporary works, including: art dolls, abstract, figurative, and narrative paintings (in oil, watercolor, and acrylic), mixed media, and video installation.

Attendees can likewise expect to encounter a spectrum of emotion. While artist Christopher B. Mooney sees his work connected with “comforting thoughts about positive social interactions in a world full of uncertainty, anger, and fearfulness,” artist Erin Robinson Grant seeks to establish a more uneasy, morbid connection. Despite the widely varying presentation and underlying intent, the artistic revelations in this exhibition will help to reveal the common language of human reaction, while previewing the progressive future direction of the gallery.

Inside Out: Revelations From Newer Faces will be on display at Gallery 114 from March 1 – April 1, 2012. Please join them on Thursday, March 1, from 6-9 p.m., for the exhibition opening and to meet the artists. Gallery 114 participates in “First Thursday” festivities, previewing art exhibitions showing at downtown art galleries. Gallery 114 is located at 1100 NW Glisan, Portland, Oregon 97209. The reception is free and open to the public.

Gallery 114 is the only established gallery in Portland that has persisted in allowing its artists absolute artistic freedom throughout its 20-year history. Founded in 1990 as an artist collective, Gallery 114 and its members have consistently produced a diversity of artwork.
