Stories of Everyday Impact
Tamara & Lauren's Story
"The Peninsula Family YMCA is a healthy, fun, encouraging and wonderful place that I have been lucky enough, this past summer, to have my daughter attend. She made new friends that she keeps in touch with and even goes to the same school with this year.
The entire staff was so thoughtful, patient and compassionate. They never made me feel "less" because I had to use financial assistance due to a recent move and divorce. I had to do what was best for my family, and the YMCA was so accommodating and kind through it all.
My daughter, Lauren and I are now Peninsula YMCA members and always will be! We enjoy swimming together in the pool and hot tub. My daughter and I would have been bored all summer had it not been for the YMCA. Lauren was able to attend summer camp, which gave me the opportunity to look for full-time work. We are forever grateful to the Y and get a good feeling every time we pull into the driveway.
Thank you to everyone at the YMCA!"

"My son, Adam, became a
participant in the YMCA water polo program in February 2011, attending every
session offered since then. In June of 2011 Adam chose to enroll in the San
Diego Junior Lifeguard program. He took the Junior Lifeguard Prep course
through the YMCA. With the YMCA staff support and conditioning received through
the water polo program he passed the test with flying colors. Throughout July/August 2011, he attended
Junior Lifeguards every weekday and the YMCA water polo program on Saturdays.
As if that was not enough, he asked me if he could take private lessons with
Coach Ken at 7:30 a.m. before school on Tuesday and Thursdays to perfect his
skills even more, which he has done for the last three months!Over the last year, and as a
direct result of his participation in this program, I have seen Adam grow and
develop in ways I never imagined including physical strength, endurance,
confidence, and a newly found interest in exercise and healthy living. Coach
Ken has been an amazing mentor to Adam. His teaching style is fun yet tough and
realistic. Adam looks to Ken as a role
model and I truly believe that the skills that he has taught Adam will benefit
him in every avenue of life. The memories heβs had through his experience in
this program and with the many friends he has made will stay with him forever."

"Our two boys, David, who is 7,
and Patrick, who is 5, were so happy in their swim lessons with Marlena.
She is nurturing and fun and she has a unique gift for understanding
what each child needs from her. While Patrick took to swimming rather
naturally, David has always been anxious in the water - swimming has not
come easily, and this is really frustrating for a kid who wants to
surf! Marlena understood that he needed to trust her, first, before he
would allow her to teach him. So she built that trust and then pushed him
to keep trying a little harder each lesson. After just a few lessons, we
were thrilled to see him swim the way across the pool on his
own! And he came out of the pool with a huge smile on the face, knowing
that he had finally overcome his fear of the water. David is not just a good
swimmer now - a huge relief for us in terms of safety - he is also a
more confident kid. We are so grateful to Marlena, and to the Y, for
taking such good care of our boys!"
