Monastic Life at Saint John's

spacer Monastic life at Saint John’s is ordered with the daily schedule of worship and work, and rarely varies, with the four seasons of central Minnesota reflected in the woods, lakes and prairies that surround us are similarly predictable. Both attest to, and enhance our vow of stability. However, sharing our large campus with over 4,000 students, a large Catholic publishing house, and a center for ecumenical studies, just to name a few of our apostolates, tends to keep things lively. Certainly, this is the way of any monastery in that it is set “in the world” yet apart from it. Maybe as a monastic community, we are just a bit closer than some.

Every abbey offers a different experience of monasticism, reflective of the community and apostolates they share. At Saint John's Abbey, the monastic life offers an extraordinary range of vocation. Every monk lives within the rigor of the horarium and monastic discipline, yet remains free to explore various forms of employment, ministry, hobbies and other interests. With a large community of 150 men, Saint John's monks may live and practice the Benedictine rhythm of worship and work in both traditional and unique ways.
