Succulents store moisture in fleshy leaves and stems,
which allows them to survive periods of drought (such as when you forget to water them). Common types include agaves, aloes, aeoniums, crassulas, euphorbias, echeverias, kalanchoes, sedums and sempervivums.

Left: Aloe nobilis, beautifully stressed. For more on stressing succulents, see my YouTube video.

Succulents are hugely popular because...
...water shortages and drought impact many regions.
...they're a good lawn alternative.
...they're fire-resistant and fire-retardant.
...they're easy to cultivate and propagate.
...they require minimal
maintenance.
...they range in size from tiny-leaved ground covers to tall trees.
...many have geometric shapes.
...they add interest to gardens large and small.
...leaves and stems come in every color.
...they're intriguing year-round.
...most produce long-lasting, vivid flowers.
...new cultivars are being introduced all the time.
...they're more readily available than ever before.
...they're highly collectible.

Most sedums and sempervivums and some agaves and cacti survive temperatures below freezing, but the majority of succulents are frost-tender, and dislike searing sun and prolonged wet conditions. But anyone, anywhere, can grow succulents in containers, which can be sheltered indoors.

...Which is why I wrote Succulent Container Gardens, the sequel to Designing with Succulents.

About me: I'm a career journalist who during the '90s and into this century specialized in writing about homes, gardens, architecture and interior design for the San Diego Union-Tribune and other publications. I also served as Sunset magazine's main scout in the San Diego area.

In 2005, my editor at Sunset suggested I do a book on succulent plants. "Designing with Succulents" came out in 2007 and spent 19 weeks on Amazon's list of the Top Ten Bestselling Gardening Books. It has been on the Top 100 list ever since. The sequel "Succulent Container Gardens" (2010) also became a bestseller. Both made the Wall Street Journal's Spring, 2011 Top Ten Gardening Books.

I also produce photo CDs and videos, speak at horticultural venues, and offer a line of succulent-themed cards and gifts. My goal is to provide, via print and electronic media, useful information about "plants that drink responsibly," and how to use them to create lovely gardens and container compositions.

I welcome your emails and comments! Enjoy my blog and follow me on Facebook.
