Message from Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland's Languages
New Scots can make positive contributions to Scotland - not just economically, but socially, culturally and in other ways. They must therefore have the opportunity to access high quality English language provision so that they can acquire the language skills to enable them to participate fully in Scottish life. Improved language skills give all New Scots the opportunity to achieve their full potential as well as helping to gain British Citizenship.
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) strategy launched in 2007 aims to provide a blueprint for the direction and structure of publicly-funded ESOL provision in Scotland. Since then, Scottish Ministers have provided additional funding to support learning and to improve the quantity and quality of ESOL provision. Since 2007 over 32,000 new places for ESOL learners have been created as a result of this investment.
