Christmas Shopping

November 13th, 2006

I think I might’ve maxed out my credit card after buying gifts from shops and ebay. And it’s only November!

And what’s even more sad…I’ve written most of my Christmas cards and sent them out already.

I think I might be turning into a Brit. :)

Absinthe Night

October 23rd, 2006

Pics from Absinthe Night with Karen. It’s been 10 years since we’ve seen each other, so when she told me she was going to be in London, we had to meet up. After a day of shopping, we decided to go for a few drinks. Andy was designated driver. What a sweetie!

After we did have some Tequila shots (I love tequila!!), some snakebite and cocktails, we decided we’d give Absinthe a try. Karen and I were absinthe virgins, so we were a bit worried how we would deal with it. Andy bought a bottle (£40!! 0_o) and we headed back home (so Andy could have some too ;) ).

What fun! I’m so glad they didn’t take pics when I was sick/passed out. I’m such a bloody light weight. Fortunately I woke up the next morning without a hangover. If it weren’t for the bag of (what was supposed to be frozen) peas on my head, I would’ve forgotten that I got pretty sick when the curry man came. Absinthe + Vivid picture of hot steamy curry = XD

The Score:

Sinta: 3 shots

Karen: 4 shots

Andy: 5 shots

Pics from camera phone. Sorry for crappiness! Here ya go:

TGIF!

October 13th, 2006

Am I glad it’s Friday. Life’s been hectic recently. Classes have started, so I spend my Tuesday and Thursday evenings 17:30 to 20:30 studying law, constitution, contracts and legal skills. Besides those six hours, the uni expects me to put in another 24 hours studying the subjects at home. How in the world am I supposed to do that?

Eitherways, I’m adopting the Uni Library as my second home. It reminds me a lot of the libraries in Brent and JIS. Cool, quiet with just a subtle buzz of energy. My kind of atmosphere.

Gotta put the books away this weekend though. Karen’s coming over from London. Hurrah! Haven’t seen her since my Brent Baguio days. We got a lot of catching up to do and I believe it is my duty to introduce her to the traditions of the English North.

Champagne reception.. hah!

September 21st, 2006

Y’know I’m spoilt when I expect a Champagne reception during the induction of a course. No champagne reception, no orange juice reception even. My first impression of the course was when I walked into the room and saw the bored (perhaps even jaded) eyes of the mature students already sitting at their desks. Only silence prevailed. And there was no sign of the lecturer anywhere.I took a seat beside Ms. L, who I met on the lift. When staff did appear, there was an issue with the computer/projector. Once resolved there were powerpoint slides, discussions about personal tutors, support, failure statistics of last year, what to do when you fail an exam, resits, assessments and oh… the practiced ’Welcome to X Uni’.

Perhaps it’s just my Swiss-ness that I expected a bit more of a formal greeting. Part-time student I may be, but a paying student I am as well. Andy assured me that this was the same in his own Uni and it’s just a practiced routine.

Oh well, looks like I better buckle up and expect no frills for the next four years. A crappy greeting isn’t one that’ll send this Law student scurrying away.

Cheese, Chocolate and Shoes… Oh my!

September 20th, 2006

I did a runner last week. No, I don’t mean I slept with one. Instead, I ran off to Switzerland for an overly-expensive five day holiday. I needed a break. I needed a rest. And when dad called to tell me he was going to fly to our little landlocked country from Africa, I took it as an excuse to buy some indecently expensive tickets and meet him there as well.Ah, but it was lovely. I met up with Nina and had a lovely chat. Catching up on what’s been happening since the end of our apprenticeships. Who’s doing what and when, earning this and that, managing who and where? I finally was able to order a lovely black vodka and red bull, which seems to be an elusive mix in England.

Unfortunately I couldn’t splurge on chocolate or cheese this holiday. A week before I did a quick cholesterol test in the office and where 5 and under was normal, mine was 7.11. Shock? A little. I blame filipino cooking. Mmmmm. So a few days before my trip I had to starve myself for 12 hours and do a full blood test at the doctors.

It was a lovely holiday, spending time with the family, visiting Stein am Rhein, take the boat for a lovely morning meal around the lake and window shopping. Forgot how cheap some stuff are in Switzerland with the 7.6% VAT. In England it’s closer to 17%. It was sad to leave my little cheese country, but my two shoes, which are a new addition to my collection, perked me up nicely.

I returned on Monday afternoon and called my doctor about the results of my blood test. The results? Absolutely fine and healthy. If I wasn’t so tired I would’ve screamed for the lost chances of chocolate binges. Instead I went to sleep and dreamt of Lindt Milk Chocolates with Hazelnut.

Safety Nets

August 31st, 2006

When we bought our lovely Peugot 206 LX, we bargained and got a two year extended warranty. It would be our safety net. It would be our hero. For days like yesterday.

The exhaust practically fell off the car.

No problem, we thought. Andy brought the car to the dealership to get it sorted. Unfortunately they said it wasn’t under warranty. Something about a catalitic-converter doohickey not being covered. Costs? £245. Timescale? In a few days.

Not willing to settle, we drove it to a garage, at a corner of Cudworth. No frills. No coffee in the waiting room. No magazine rack. But the best service you can get. A free check over and then… Costs? £45. Timescale? This afternoon.

I sent Andy to grab a nice bottle of whiskey for those decent mechanics.

So if you’re living around Barnsley and are worried about being conned for a car fix, try:
