Bald Eagles over West Nyack

Sunday, March 4, 2012

If you followed the fortunes of wildlife prior to 1970, you probably thought the American Bald Eagle was a goner. In 1963 there were only 417 breeding pairs in the lower 48—down from a half million before European settlers arrived. In spite of the eagle’s status as national bird, more than 100,000 of them were killed in Alaska alone from 1917 to 1953, because salmon fisherman perceived them to be a threat to the salmon population. Nationwide, the eagle’s decline had a number of causes: habitat destruction due...

Love that library

Sunday, March 4, 2012

We often hear national politicians and media pundits claim that nohow, for no reason whatsoever, will voters agree to any increased taxes. But voters of Nyack and Valley Cottage passed a library budget tax increase of 3.4% that will fund their libraries through the 2012-13 year. The additional tax revenue will also help offset income losses. Recent expansion of the buildings requires the library to keep $950,000 in the bank, where it earns less than 1 percent annual interest. Library officials said the tax increase...

Sunday, March 4, 2012

The cutest thing ever. Your new puppy. This is the start of a long, close relationship. You need to be prepared to make the very best of this relationship. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out of it. While nature plays a part, nurture is very important. When picking a pet, you should consider what your perfect pet would be like and choose...

Aunt Fran’s Irish Soda Bread by Cindy Coligan

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Oh my, can it really be true? Spring, beautiful spring is right around the corner! What happened to winter? Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. No one dislikes shoveling as much as I do. However, I do enjoy the smell of a big pot of stew, or a pot roast on the stove while sipping a nice red wine and watching the snow fall. But alas, it was not to be this year—yet. So I will look ahead to the one day of the year when everyone is Irish—or celebrates the Irish at any rate.  Read More

Nyack Center Camp Story

Saturday, March 3, 2012

A story in the Journal News said the NY State Comptroller’s Office found that, for four years, village taxpayers have been paying for children who live outside of Nyack to attend Nyack Center’s summer camp—this because Center officials failed to keep accurate records and village trustees provided poor oversight. Kim Cross, Director of the Center, told our reporter, “The Journal-News had it right—until the audit, Nyack Center didn’t know we were required to maintain separate accounts.  Going  forward...

Komen vs Planned Parenthood

Saturday, March 3, 2012

When Karen Handel, newly-appointed Vice President for Public Affairs of the Komen Foundation, announced the organization would de-fund Planned Parenthood, cutting off $700,000 in grants for a wide range of women’s health services, it touched off a firestorm of criticism.  Handel claimed the action was because of a routine change in criteria of who is eligible to receive grants —not due to anti-abortion politics. Then it was disclosed that Handel had been an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Georgia on the...

Crossing the Hudson by Harriet Cornell

How many of my fellow Rocklanders remember what life was like in 1955? Most of us (or our parents) were driving Chevys or Fords that cost less than $2,000 and we were paying 23¢ per gallon for gas. It was in that climate that the character of Rockland County and the entire Hudson Valley was [...]
