Arran Music and Drama Club

ARRAN MUSIC & DRAMA CLUB

Since 1987, Arran Music & Drama Club has performed some of the ‘all time great’ musicals; ‘Merry Widow’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘Showboat’, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘South Pacific’ etc., with a cast of up to 40, and of all ages. The Club had come a long way since its beginnings 13 years earlier.
Taking into account the size of the population of the Isle of Arran, over the years the island has been well served by drama and music festivals. Yet, despite all the village drama clubs and choirs, no amateur operatic shows were produced until, in 1975/6, an enthusiastic little group gathered together, following an advert in the ‘Arran Banner’.
The group called themselves the ‘Isle of Arran Gilbert & Sullivan Society’, and the popular Scottish recording and TV singing star, Peter Morrison, who is a G&S fan and has a house on Arran, agreed to become Honorary Patron.
The original intention was to play records of, and discuss, the works of W S Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan. There was a plan to perform a selection of their music in a concert form, but this developed into a condensed version of ‘Mikado’, produced and narrated by High School teacher Heather Gough.
This was performed in Corrie Hall in 1978, and was so successful that membership almost doubled, and in 1979 the Society performed ‘HMS Pinafore’ in several village halls. This was followed by ‘Iolanthe’, ‘The Gondoliers’, ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and then, in 1983, the complete ‘Mikado’; these being performed in Brodick Hall.
After all the popular Gilbert & Sullivan operas had been performed, the Society turned to more modern musicals and so, in 1998, it was decided to change the name to ‘Arran Music & Drama Club’.

Unfortunately, there will be no production from the company this year (2012). Arran Music & Drama Club have reluctantly decided to discontinue rehearsals for 'Little Shop of Horrors'. For a number of good, personal reasons we have been unable to get enough people to cast it.
The Club is not folding, and we will regroup in August, prior to our AGM on 20th September.
