So, that was a MUCH longer hiatus than I anticipated! I am so sorry – and I am so thankful to the people who wrote to check on me. It’s been an eventful couple of months on the in-person life front.

Nothing too heinous. But a whole lot of stress, which hit me right in the old depreshuns. And when I’m depressed… writing is hard.

I’ve been easing back into it though, including a gig over at xojane.com – I’m proud to be involved over there, y’all.

And I especially wanted to link here to my newest post there – because I’m talking about the time I posed naked for cancer. Which is, if any one thing can be the genesis of something, the real and true origin of this blog.

I am so glad to see you again. And I hope you’ll come chatter with us on this post:

Probably not daily – there’s just no TIME – but definitely back to posting. I’ve just missed it way too much.

So glad to have you back, Marianne! And congrats on the writing at xojane (I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it). I have missed your voice. I don’t have many heroes, but you are one of them.

Thank you, Lonie. The really important thing about community is that everyone doesn’t have to do everything all the time – and I so completely needed this break. I’ve been ready to come back for a while; I’m glad I got to do it on this note.

    Welcome back!

    re: your xojane post

spacer Life-drawing modelling (also known as “nudity for the elderly”) was a huge part of my initial journey into fat acceptance! There’s something incredibly amazing about standing around in the starkers for an appreciative and polite crowd that does wonders for one’s sense of perspective. The artists were always happy to have a range of different models rather than just drawing the same body type again and again and again. And different poses too! The poses I did that people liked the best were interesting and different ones, rather than standard “flattering” ones.

I don’t model any more and I’d probably have to work up the nerve to do it again (even more pounds and stretch-marks later – the self-hate abates, but is never quite cured), but it’s definitely something that I recommend people consider if they are trying to figure out how to get comfortable in their own skin.

    (Heaters are essential, however.)

Life drawing is a great thing for some people, definitely! It can be hard, depending on people’s schedules, unfortunately. I think it’s so great for artists to have the chance to draw other bodies, though – because models are so similar in body type.

      Being naked gets chilly!

Glad to see you’re back, and hope you’re feeling better now. Depression sucks…but good self-care (and sometimes that means NOT doing stuff) can sometimes mean it doesn’t suck for quite so long.

Welcome back! We’ve missed you terribly.

But do put yourself first. If you need another break, take it and use it well.

(dances at the thought of more Marianne posts)

Wow, I saw the limes pictures.I just wanted to say, I think you are beautiful. I wish I could be in a place where I could look at my body and say, ‘I look ok’, I guess it’s a work in progress. I am glad you gave the middle finger to the man who was negative about your body, you deserve a whole lot better (like your husband!) Thank you for all that you do.

    Welcome back!!!

    This line is so awesome:

“You may not want to look at me, you may not want to see me, but that doesnโ€™t mean I have any obligation to hide from you. My body is out in the world; my body is what my body is. I am not ashamed of it.”

Rock on, Girlfriend!! I’ve only recently gotten comfortable looking at pictures of myself and not instinctively flinching. And I’m always fully clothed when there’s a camera around. My goal is to reach the level of body confidence you displayed in that post and in those pictures.

I’ll say it again: Rock on, Girlfriend!!

About Me

Hi! I'm Marianne Kirby! I'm fat!

How are you?

I'm on a mission here to let you know that fat people are not your enemy. And skinny people aren't your enemy either.

Here, the body is a political one no matter its size or shape. We are going to unpack society's standards of beauty, the oppression of the dominant social paradigm when it comes to body conformity, and talk about clothes. Maybe even makeup. Because I do love makeup.

Here, I hope, we will come to a place of acceptance. Acceptance for our own bodies and for the bodies of others.

Got something to say? Contact me. All hate mail, particularly fat-phobic rants, is subject to mocking.
