I have been lucky enough to win an exchange bursary which operates between the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland and the Varuna Writers' Centre in Australia. It means I will be able to spend time writing in a lovely environment in New South Wales, and I also plan to do some travelling in the outback, and to spend some time in Melbourne researching new ideas

The New Policeman won the CBI Bisto Book of the Year Award on the 31st May. It is the fourth time I've won the award, and the sponsors have given me the beautiful trophy to keep.

It has been an exciting year, to say the least. In June 2005 I won the Childrens Books Ireland Bisto Book of the Year Award for Annan Water, and became the first author to have won the award three times. In September The New Policeman won The Guardian Childrens Fiction Prize, and has gone on to win The Whitbread Childrens Book of the Year, and the Dublin Airport Authorities Childrens Book of the Year.
All this has led on to a new world of publicity and events, and I have hardly had a moment to think since then. Among other things, I have been recording the music for an audio book of The New Policeman so watch this space for details of its release.
