John Mayer Quits Twitter, Leaving 3.7 Million Followers Behind

This seems like a bad move to me.

Stan Schroeder quotes John Mayer saying:

I had 3.3 million Twitter followers back in March April when I announced that I’d be predominantly posting on Tumblr, a site that takes all of 25 seconds to sign up for. Five months later I have just passed 50,000 followers, a fraction of my Twitter base… I will leave the opining up to you, but I think I made the right move.

Okay, I’ll opine. You’re looking at it all wrong. Maybe those 3.7 million followers are happy with Twitter and don’t want to create Yet Another Social Media Account to follow you on Tumblr.

I guess if you only want to talk to your most devoted fans and those who already have Tumblr accounts, then by all means, drop Twitter. And in a few months, test them again by moving to some other site.

But if you want to talk to everyone who has some interesting in listening to you, then why not simply cross post the same things to both services? If you want to do your interaction on just one site, then do that. But it’s silly to tell all your “subscribers” that they have to change their subscriptions to your new preferred service when surely it costs you next to nothing to continue to support them in the place they first supported you.
