The In The City Hive

The In The City Hive is the brand new educational arm of In The City, the UK’s premier new music event.

The Hive is a packed two day music industry conference that will run in Malmaison, Manchester across the 13th and 14th October, for students 16+ looking to make their name in the music business.  

Over the course of the two days, delegates will be given the opportunity to network with industry keynote speakers, partake in topical debate and panel discussions and get hands on experience from proactive workshops featuring a host of industry professionals that you won’t get the chance to meet anywhere else.    

All bases are covered in The Hive, so whether you want to go into artist management, publishing, production, songwriting, blogging…there will be something here for you delivered by the best in the business.  

The Hive is the only opportunity to learn from and network with some of the biggest names in the music industry and is priced at just £60 for two days. This includes free and unlimited access to all In The City gigs happening in The Northern Quarter from 13th – 15th October.

The CMU Seminars  - Mal 2: Wednesday 13th 12.00pm, Thursday 14th 12.00pm & 1.15pm

Chris Cooke, editor of esteemed music industry trade publication CMU Daily and founder of Unlimited Media, presents the CMU Seminars, giving delegates the lowdown on everything they need to know from a beginners guide to copyright, to getting a job in music, to making money from the music industry. 

The Music Managers’ Panel - Mal 2: Thursday 14th 3.00pm

The role of a music manager has morphed dramatically in recent years as roles, responsibilities and commitments begin merging together. If you are a manager just starting out, what should your aims and objectives be? How do you go about getting your artists the recognition they deserve and if they get it how will that change your role?

My Generation, Next Generation - Mal 2: Wednesday 13th 3.45pm

Drowned in Sound founder Sean Adams and Oliver Clueit, founder of My Band Is Better Than Your Band, host a discussion on the evolution of music blogging. In the years since it first came to the fore giving a voice to the impassioned music masses, blogging has grown to become one of the most important and influential forms of new media. Not only has it documented the tastes, talent and transitions of the last ten years, but it has helped create them. Now in a more powerful position than ever before, the panel will discuss the influence blogging will have on the next generation of trends.

‘Routine’ With Tommy D - Waldorf: Wednesday 13th 12.00pm & 2.30pm

Tommy D, the man behind chart smashes by the likes of Kylie Minogue, Kanye West and Jay-Z, brings his 'Routine' masterclass to The Hive. ‘Routine’ sees Tommy producing a band in a live environment offering invaluable professional knowledge and advice on how a band can improve their sound before heading into the studio. This unique session will allow Hive delegates an unrivaled insight into one of the most important aspects of the creative process from one of the most respected producers in the industry. The Musicians' Union Guide to Doing It Yourself - Mal 1: Thursday 14th 3.30pm

Want to release a record or start off your own management company but don’t quite know how to do it? The Musicians’ Union talks Hive delegates through the whys and wherefores of going it alone in the music industry.

The Northern Song Collective Songwriting Masterclass - Waldorf: Thursday 14th 10.30am

Brand new Manchester based songwriting outfit, The Northern Song Collective, take you through the creative process of songwriting with a few industry heavyweights. Jim Spencer, producer of Jonny Marr and The Charlatans, will join Mercury Prize nominated John Bramwell from I Am Kloot with more participants to be announced shortly.

Mandy Parnell’s Mastering Masterclass - Rockhopper: Thursday 14th 12.00pm & 4.00pm 

Mandy Parnell has worked with some of the biggest acts around in her Black Saloon studios, from Badly Drawn Boy to Faithless, James to Missy Elliot. Mandy will be presenting her ‘Before & After Mastering Masterclass’ to Hive delegates in the Rockhopper, a 34-foot long purpose built recording studio.

The Insiders Guide To The Media - Mal 1: Wednesday 13th 12.30pm & 3.00pm

Ray Paul, one the founding members of BBC Radio 1 Xtra, presents a workshop for The In The City Hive delegates. Discussing and outlining the different roles of the media and the power media has to influence those who read it. A must journalists, bloggers and publicists!

The Untapped Goldmine: The Importance Of Publishing - Mal 2: Thursday 14th 4.30pm 

Now we aren’t saying we can make you a fortune, but there are ways and means for young acts to get money out of the music business without chasing that elusive record deal. Whenever your songs are played in public you should be getting a cut, but how do you go about getting it? We let you in on the secret. 

Heavy What? HeavyFeet & Stamp! Beats Present The New Way Of Thinking - Mal 2: Wednesday 13th 2.30pm 

Manchester-based production duo, HeavyFeet (Bingo/Skint/Trouble & Bass), present an hour long case study of their new record label, Stamp! Beats, centring on their reasons for giving much of the label's output away for free, the importance of creative collaboration with artists from other genres, maintaining media and PR hype, why mid-level artists should control their own output and finances, and having the guts to go where other artist-run labels haven't gone before.

Learning How To Sell Yourself: The Art Of Networking - Mal 2: Wednesday 13th 5.00pm 

They say it’s not what you know, but who you know. But if you’re just starting out in the business you aren’t going to know anyone. How do you know who to approach and what to approach them about? How do you make your pitch and once you’re in, how do you take it on to the next step? Industry professional Phil Ellis is joined by Karen Holden (UKTI) and Shaun Arnold (Director of Rockness/Go North Festival) to show you the best way of selling yourself.

Each evening The In The City Hive will continue at a nearby venue where delegates can enjoy a drink and the chance to network with each other, putting their skills into practice.
