About the Foundation

Welcome

We proudly present the OREL Website which provides information and ongoing discussion about composers whose careers were destroyed or irrevocably altered by the events in mid– 20th century Europe.  Our goal is neither to write eulogies nor to create narratives or "spins" concerning the material we present.  Rather we wish to provide information for those who are interested in studying and performing this repertoire.

That information takes many forms.  For each composer listed we have provided a short, up–to–date biography.  We have also included brief discussions of works.  In addition we offer a substantial bibliography and work list to encourage further study of the music and the biographical circumstances.  Where appropriate we include links to other sites.  Visitors will have their own tastes and their own responses, but we hope that most, if not all, will agree that these composers and their works comprise a remarkable chapter in the history of music, both in their challenging and even painful circumstances, as well as in their current dynamic revival.

In the future we hope to augment the site with recording samples, some scores and more articles— both about additional composers and broader issues relating to them.  We eagerly welcome input from our readers and look forward to a long and productive collaboration with all who share our interest in these composers and their music.
