Durham's Day of Service for MLK Friday, January 13, 2012
Durham students and volunteers plan to gather to package meals to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Monday, students and
volunteers will spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day, typically a day off from work
and school for many, packaging meals to go to hungry families around the world.
Over 500 students from Duke University and North Carolina Central University
will team up with the Durham Rotary Club and gather in the Freeman Center for
Jewish Life at 9:30AM for this annual event.
Over 64,500 meals were
packaged last year at this event, which was held at Southern High School. This
year the groups have set a goal to package 80,000 meals, which will be shipped
to school feeding programs across the globe. With each meal costing 25 cents, funds
for the meals were given by sponsors, donors and volunteers of Duke offices and
programs including Duke Chapel, Duke Center for Multicultural Affairs, Duke MLK
Commemoration Committee and more.
Reverend Dr. Sam Wells of
Duke Chapel mentioned how students and volunteers from many different
backgrounds will be coming together for contributing, serving and helping is a
fitting way to honor the life of Dr. King. "He was an inspirational leader
who understood the call to service to be an expression of his personal faith,”
he said.
