Stuart and I embarked on a collaboration which evolved intuitively and at its own pace. We arrived at French film director Robert Bresson—his films and writings—as our starting point. We were both drawn to, in Stuart’s words,

The films’ sense of inevitability. They are functions of their own logic, and seem to exist to give rise to that logic. A given film exists just as much because of a certain small gesture, a color or a sound, as it does because of Bresson’s philosophical particularities or his interest in a story or character.”

Through our continuing correspondence and drawing out of thoughts, Stuart was able to generate more language, “I imagine these texts as fragments, that share something of the aphoristic quality of Bresson’s writings, with a poem coming at their end.”

I made black and white stills from L’argent and Lancelot du Lac creating new crops and moods. Stray reflections, texture and artifact added another layer, “Almost like the cinematic apparatus itself talking: the projector, the camera, the theater all chiming in.”

This chapbook, the first part of The Forged Coupon project, is printed by Publication Studio on the occasion of As Yet Untitled featuring newly commissioned works. PS Berkeley was in residence during the show and an extended book version of this project will be available on demand through Publication Studio’s website.
