About Our House
The foyer (before) covered with fabric, yep, and layers and layers of wallpaper, front door back was covered in black faux fur.
We purchased our first house an eclectic 1936 home in Western Washington on a rehab loan. This is a total renovation/restoration. Technically we are the 2nd owners of this house. It was previously inhabited by a creative compulsive hoarder and had no upkeep since the early 70′s. The cabinets were covered in blue faux fur, the doors in red faux fur, wood was covered with faux wood contact paper, and more craziness that we’ve forgotten by now. It hadn’t been cleaned since the early 70′s either. It was a “dude” house, father and son. We have had to deal with things that others would run away from. Luckily we haven’t encountered anything too crazy, we’ve just have seen more nastiness than you can imagine. Well, not if you’ve seen that TV show on A&E.
Some basics of the house: It has a great room with a fireplace, a kitchen, a small dining nook, 3 bedrooms, 1 full bath, 1 powder room sans shower/bath, foyer, and a tiny room that used to be a nursery. It has a basement (that we unfinished) a garage, and a large deck. We have a small lot.
Some Cookie Monster covered doors
Good for us, the previous owners were slackers. This means little was done to the house. No lame 80′s makeovers, etc. Nothing has been changed drastically. If it was changed, we could peel it off. Being a hoarder, problems were dealt with by covering up. We got lucky. The house has nice bones, plaster walls, and most of the original hardware, fixtures, etc. However, the lighting had been changed. Bummer. Oh, well.
We’re working with the house. We saw the potential in this house from the beginning. It would be much easier to go in and replace everything. That’s not us. We’ve always been “old souls” and have been in the old stuff circuit since we were kids. We think old stuff is cool. Why change that?
