LC Book Catalog Orders

By Ann | March 1, 2012

The Library of Congress (LC) National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) of which Talking Books Plus (TBP) is affiliated as a network library will be sending TBP members a form to order book catalogs.  The Digital Talking Books Plus catalog is a more organized compilation of the titles in the Talking Book Topics catalogs that are received bi-monthly. The Digitial Talking Books Plus 2011 catalog will contain all of the titles in the January through December 2011 issues of the Talking Book Topics catalogs. The Digital Talking Books Plus catalog organizes titles by subject and provides a title index which makes book searching easier.  As the January through December 2011 Talking Book Topics catalogs contain the same titles, once the Digital Talking Books Plus 2011 catalog is received, all of the Talking Book Topics 2011 catalogs may be discarded. TBP members are encouraged to review the large print order forms they will receive in the mail. The forms should be returned to the specified address on the postage-paid envelope provided with the form. Need any help understanding the form or catalog choices, call TBP at 574-9310.

Free app replaces cell phone keyboard

By Ann | February 23, 2012

Entering text on an accessible phone has become easier. Soon to be released, an app has been developed at Georgia Institute of Technology called Braille Touch. It speaks letters aloud. This touch-screen Braille keyboard allowed a visually impaired person to type at a rate of 32 words per minute. Virtual keyboards and soft keyboards such as Apple’s voice-over keyboard tend to be slow. Hardware to increase speed on these devices can be expensive. On Android phones, the BrailleTouch app can be programmed in as the phone’s standard keyboard. For more details, read the CNN article written by John D. Sutter. When you try the app text about the digital book you downloaded from Talking Books Plus.

By Ann | February 15, 2012

The following is quoted from a Librarian.

There’s an  HTML version of Facebook that’s really easy to use without the pop ups.  I’m totally blind and when I first started using facebook I hated it until I found that link. Now I love it.

When a Cartridge Won't Play

By Ann | February 10, 2012

Back in December it was announced that a Digital Talking Book Machine software revision is being added to digital book cartridges in December 2011. This works with books recorded at the National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). However, when a book is recorded at a network library, the software may not be on the digital book cartridge. Email tbplus@olis.ri.gov or call 574-9310 at  Talking Books Plus to request a software cartridge to insert into the player to update the player. The cartridge should then play the book.

NLS books are coded RC and DB. Locally produced books have different codes such as DBM.
