Palmela2011 Logo by Sandra Mexa

When the IVRPA asked me to design the Palmela 2011 logo—the first IVRPA conference in Portugal—I immediately decided that it needed to represent the Portuguese culture.

The first representation that came to my mind was Filigrana—a very special handcraft of gold and silver pieces—traditionally from the north part of the country—Minho. The jewelery pieces are made with thin gold strings that are worked beautifully into different shapes. The most popular are the heart–shaped ornaments that are a part of the traditional garments of this region.

That shape just kept in my mind and by all perspectives it represented very well what I wanted the logo to say about Portuguese people:

  • passion
  • emotion
  • love
  • warmth

I added a few more attributes to it:

  • colors gradient (that represent a colorful country in between sea, sun and earth)
  • spirals as “Filigrana strings” (that represent the “spiral dance” that 360 º photographers—“spinners”—and cameras do). This makes the necessary connection to the conference subject.

Hoping that this logo and the conference itself will get this message to all who will join this international event.
