ABQ Barcamp - 11/11

by KEVIN SILVER :: SEP 15, 2006 :: COMMENTS (2)

It's time for Albuquerque BarCamp (11/11/2006 -- location tbd). What is a BarCamp? Well, the BarCamp website defines it as:

"an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees."

The BarCamp website goes on to define some rules:

  • When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers.
  • When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

Or my favorite, the 8 Rules of BarCamp:

  • 1st Rule: You do talk about Bar Camp.
  • 2nd Rule: You do blog about Bar Camp.
  • 3rd Rule: If you want to present, you must write your topic and name in a presentation slot.
  • 4th Rule: Only three word intros.
  • 5th Rule: As many presentations at a time as facilities allow for.
  • 6th Rule: No pre-scheduled presentations, no tourists.
  • 7th Rule: Presentations will go on as long as they have to or until they run into another presentation slot.
  • 8th Rule: If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present. (Ok, you don't really HAVE to, but try to find someone to present with, or at least ask questions and be an interactive participant.)

The BarCamp website has a lot of additional information on what to expect when you attend a BarCamp.

The Albuquerque BarCamp will be held on 11/11/2006 (tentatively from 9am - 4:30pm), we’re thinking we should start off with a day event and then in the future expand. We are still locking in a location, though CNM looks like a promising option.

If you have any logistic ideas, please let us know. We would like to limit the scope of the BarCamp to all things web. This means we would love to hear (and we’ll be presenting as well) you present your ideas regarding design and technology for the web: got a trick or tip, want to share with the rest of the web community your latest project, explain why Pylons is da' bomb, get down and dirty and tell us why you're in love with faceted classifications, talk about the latest craze in design -- reflections, or even hold a forum on the state of the web in New Mexico. Any topic that pertains to the web: development, design, programing, hosting, site management, internet software, product development -- you get the idea -- is welcomed. We simply want to have an open, educational and in-depth discussion on all things web.

At this point we’re not sure if there will be an entrance fee -- we do intend to try and coordinate some food and a t-shirt (design courtesy of Mark Bixby). So if you're interested in attending and/or helping us organize the event email us at: barcamp@clearwired.com. Also check out the Albuquerque BarCamp page, we’ll be updating it as we soldify the details of the event.

We firmly believe in the value of a strong local professional community for web developers and designers. Through events like BarCamp we can help bring together and reinforce existing connections with our peers to further develop our community. We want to put New Mexico on the map. And why not!? Albuquerque Rocks!

Along the way we really want to learn about your ideas and experiences and share our ideas and experience with you.

We hope you can attend; it's going to be a blast!

Great idea. I like the informality of the planning. Kind of spur-of-the-moment delivery of...whatever. A chance to find out what other folks are up to around town, and around NM.

Best,

Jonathan

This looks like a great idea and definitely an event I’d like to attend. Seeing as how theres never really many Web Conventions in New Mexico, this could be a great change of scenery for several developers/designers in the region.

BarCamp Live!

by CHRIS RIVARD :: NOV 11, 2006 :: COMMENTS (0)

I am live blogging Albuquerque BarCamp today. We'll see how it goes. I have two presentations to give, so I'll pass the laptop over to Kevin or Andrew when I get going. We have a great group of web pros from the New Mexico area.
