Board interviews two for top spot

by Phil Johnson
March 14th, 2012

BIt is one of the most important functions that the Escambia County Board of Education carries out, and is often considered the most difficult: selecting the person who will lead all the schools in the county. The process with selecting a superintendent for Escambia County continued Thursday, March 8, with the public interviews of the candidates for county school superintendent. There were two applicants: Zickeyous Byrd, principal at Escambia County High School, and Randall Little, interim superintendent of Escambia County Schools.

“Both interviews went well,” W. J. Grissett, BOE chairman, said later. “We are very fortunate to have two competent applicants to interview for the top education leadership position. Both candidates demonstrated high levels of academic and leadership preparation, but most of all, both demonstrated character, which is the inward value that determines outward action. This truly was a plus for our school board to have personnel of this caliber to …

Two old houses and an old commercial building at 163 and 171 Broad Street were burnt to the ground in a controlled burn Thursday, March 8, by the Atmore Fire Department. The Atmore City Council approved removal of the structures in its February 27 meeting as part of its campaign to clean up Atmore.

Assistant Chief Mike Staples was on hand to oversee the burn. Staples said that these burns are used to remove unsafe properties without adding to the city landfill. “It is an opportunity to train when we can safely enter buildings during a burn,” Staples said.

When asked what it is like to be in a burning building, like the one pictured here, firefighter Chris Hughes said, “It is like being in Hell. You cannot see anything and the heat is stifling, even through our protection.”

Even when a building …

Perdido Middle School student Caylee White recently received the letter she had been anxiously waiting for – the one that told her she placed in the top 100 for Alabama’s National Geo-Bee. Caylee won the school-wide bee earlier this year, then took the written test which was submitted to determine which students would qualify for the state competition later this month. Caylee’s brother, Willie, placed fourth in the state during the third level of the competition last year, so she will have plenty of help studying and preparing for the next step.

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.
