My Chatty Baby Sky

Written on March 11, 2012 by G in Parenting, Worth Sharing

Been busy around here, preparing for the upcoming Summer 2012. Doing advanced work, so I have more time with Sky when we have our mini-vacation at the end of this month.

In the meantime, sharing a cute video of him when he was still a baby. spacer

“You’re Stupid Mom!”

Written on March 5, 2012 by G in Life, Parenting

It was a couple of weeks ago when Sky first exclaimed, “You’re Stupid Mom!” I don’t remember exactly why he said it or what I did for him to trigger that word out of his mouth.

And I was REALLY offended. I don’t remember what I said or did when he said that. Because in a fit of emotional anger you tend to gorget what you did and cringe when you have a clear memory of it. So, because of my amnesia-by-anger; I most probably screamed at the top of my lungs or banged something on a nearby table or door.

Right now, I have to confess that I do let Sky watch cartoons. I let him watch Disney channel and veer him away from watching anything from Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon.

Because I always thought that Disney will be more careful and considerate with their cartoon scripts.

Well, after hearing Professor Doofenshmirtz say “Stupid,” more than once. I had to re-think my plan.

As much as i would like to ban Sky from watching TV, that is almost impossible. A parent can only protect and shield her child for so long. Eventually, he or she will be exposed to similar and even to worse words that can be a sharp knife to the ear – and to the heart.

I, myself vaguely remember the times that I shouted, “I hate you!” to both my parents. And regretfully even said that I wish that they were not my parents. When you’re young. You say a lot of STUPID words. Pun intended.

Last week, Sky called me the “S” word again – and I did not say a single word. I walked to the bathroom and grabbed the bath soap – and placed it in his mouth. I didn’t shove it up there. I just made sure he got a taste of that bathroom soap that will hopefully help WASH AWAY THAT DIRTY WORD.

What was his reaction?

He was so angry, he called me the “S” word one more time. And again, I placed the soap in his mouth.

It was a cycle that only finished when he stopped screaming and was just sobbing.

The whole time, I didn’t say a word. When he calmed down he sobbed through tears, “I’m sorry Mommy.”

“That’s not a very nice word to say Sky,” was all I could say. Admittedly, I was at a lost too.

Right now, when we hear that WORD in a movie or somewhere. We both look at each other and give that knowing nod.

This is just ONE word. And a HUNDRED MORE TO GO in the next 10 years…

And I know I have a lot more learning to do to become a better mom. I am not particularly proud of “soaping Sky’s mouth.” But at that very moment, I didn’t know what else to do. What I do learn when Sky is pissed and angry is not to fuel it with saying anything and BY DOING SOMETHING instead. I know this will happen again, and I have to re-think and re-plan on how to deal with it.

How about you? How do you respond when your child talks back?

Unexpected Fun at the Native Shoes Carnival!

Written on March 3, 2012 by G in Events

Sky and I met up with some friends over at Bonifacio High Street last Saturday at noon time. The hottest time of that day. We just came from Sky’s check-up in the morning and definitely did not want to stay indoors, it may be hot. But it was a great way to welcome the advent of summer.

In the middle of BHS, was an oasis of color and fun – Native Shoes Carnival was just about to start – and we didn’t let the heat dampen our spirits in joining. After signing up at the registration both, they gave us 8 yellow tickets and 4 green ones. Tickets that we can use for the carnival games for both the grown-ups and the kids.

The sun was way up and with only a handful of people in the are, we had first dibs with the carnival games.

If I knew the Native Shoes Carnival was going on, I would have let him wore his trusty pair of Native Shoes. If you’re a mom and in search of a good pair of shoes that will let your kids ROAM and RUN around. A pair of native shoes is a must! He dons it on and off easy, and as a mom; what I REALLY LIKED with Native Shoes is the STURDINESS even if it’s LITE.

It’s also EASY TO CLEAN and DOES NOT STINK! spacer

Sky is a pretty active, and I can ATTEST to its durability. I bought this pair in their kiosk in the 2nd level of Trinoma for P1,495.00 sometime in September – October of last year. And he still wears it daily in school, it looks like it will retire only when it can’t fit his feet anymore. spacer

The Ring Toss was a hit for the boys. Sky won a stuffed toy and a Native sticker from this game.

Darting the balloons was a bit harder for 4-5 year olds. They were given these small balloons instead. spacer

We exchanged the green tickets with free ice cream from Fruits in Ice Cream. I had two cups of the milk tea flavor! A new favorite for me.

The boys had a blast on the tub full of small colorful balls and beach balls. The only thing missing was water! They were in awe when they saw this guy on stilts.

spacer

I will definitely buy myself a pair of Native Shoes soon, it’s the perfect shoe wear for summer in the Philippines!

spacer

I am inkling to get this pair, or go for a pair that looks similar to Sky’s Native Shoes. Do visit Native Shoes Philippines Facebook page on where to go buy your pair right now and the prices for their models too! Go Lite with Native Shoes!

Explaining is Tough.

Sky turned 5 years old a couple of weeks ago, and I still can’t get over the fact that he is indeed GROWING into a smart boy, right before my eyes. If only there was a pause button somewhere – the age of 5 is truly, truly magical.

Sometimes, I forget that he can READ me like a book without me opening my mouth. This morning we BOTH had a meltdown.

Him from a game.

Me from work.

And it was a scene straight out of the clash of the titans between a mother and son.

We were both exasperated. It’s been a long time since I every got really pissed for a supposedly usual lunch at home.

I was literally lost for words and found my voice going higher and louder with every whine and cry he said.

“I WANT TO WHISPER SOMETHING IN YOUR EAR!”

Why? Why? It’s just us, why do you have to whisper it?!”

I knelt down and he gingerly place his mouth on my left ear and said, “Mom, I love you still even if we are shouting at each other okay?”

********************

It was one of those days when Sky mentioned that he misses his dad. You know I really, REALLY ave a tough time thinking of the best way to answer him. I don’t want to say anything bad about his dad – even if he’s not there.

“I MISS DADDY MOM.”

“You know Sky, I miss him too…”

“DID YOU SAY SORRY TO HIM?”

“I did…”

“DID YOU GIVE HIM A NICE GIFT?”

Flustered…. “Yes, I did too…”

I hear him sigh, and he says, “THAT’S OKAY MOMMY… YOU ARE MY MOMMY-DADDY… And I have Lolo, Mama, Tita May, Ate Ging, Tito Buboy…”

*******************

It’s true. Kid’s are more resilient and smarter than we think they are. In the end, they will understand.

AS LONG AS THEY FEEL LOVED.
