Event Summary
The What Cheer? Brigade is a 19-piece brass band from Providence, RI, USA. Our sound is an aggressive mix of Bollywood, The Balkans, New Orleans, Samba and Hip-Hop, played with the intensity of metal. Since it requires no amplification, some call our sound Luddite Hardcore—proof that loud music doesn’t need electricity. A raucous live experience, the Brigade defies categorization, appealing equally to punks and farmers, old and young. We’ve played with Dan Deacon, Man Man, Japanther, Dengue Fever, Okkervil River, Lightning Bolt, Ninjasonik, Mika Miko, Wolf Parade, Matt and Kim, Slavic Soul Party, Javelin, Sage Francis, and Chain and the Gang. We’ve appeared at Lollapalooza, Sziget (Hungary), and Guca (Serbia), offering mobile, intense moments of outdoor revelry. BRUNT OF IT started in 1995 in San Francisco, CA out of the ashes of Bay's HOODLUM EMPIRE. Many lyrics coming from Hoodlum’s lead singer and Braintrust , Rob Rock, who has been missing since 1995. BRUNT OF IT played gigs in the Bay Area for about a year until Boofish moved back to the East Coast. The band was reformed with childhood friends and band mates from the Rhode Island hardcore scene (RIX), where he was very active in his youth. The band blends a mix of Old School Hardcore Punk Rock with distorted, dissonant Ska (not a clean guitar note in their set list). Infectious choruses and a driving beat are the backbone of BRUNT OF IT's no bullshit sound.
