Of Lin, Rush, Fluke, You & Me

Since I have written and spoken so much about Lin, I have to say a few more words...

Lin captured the heart, soul, and imagination of many. Maybe, as I mentioned, we all have a Lin in us; we all have an ignored part of us that has shone, shines or will shine. Maybe Lin mirrors good news for modern human beings. Who does not have a story of being overlooked and ignored? Who among us does not feel underutilized? Lin endured all this then he ascended the mountaintop, broke basketball records, inspired just about everybody, captured the nation’s attention, and revived a city making America America again.

Then all the Knicks got healthy again and then things seemed to fall apart. There is a hush in Lin-land. Teams continue to do their homework of which the primary task is to stop the Linsanity. Are the days of Lin dazzling us and inspiring us over? Gather ye rose buds while ye may… Who knows what tomorrow brings, that said, what Lin did was worth every second of it. What Lin accomplished should make us all proud; I know I felt proud of what Lin accomplished for many Asian-Americans and Asians everywhere. So whether Lin continues to rise or not, I am eternally grateful to him for all he represents…

Then there is the brave young woman from Georgetown University. She is brave because she attends a Roman Catholic institution (albeit Jesuit), and was courageous enough to speak publicly about the rights of women over their bodies. Speaking the truth, especially a woman speaking truth to male power remains a challenging and prophetic task in 2012. A young man from a Roman Catholic college courageous enough to speak about health issues for women, especially contraceptives. Explosive.

Then there is Rush. Which one of you would want a man to call your sister, mother, niece, girlfriend, wife or aunt what Rush called that young woman? Oh Rush…. It is hard to know if his mouth will undo him this time. Who knows? Rush has apologized. I will not judge whether his apology comes from a genuine remorse or contrition for verbally and emotionally abusing Sandra Fluke or from the all powerful dollar.

All of us have the challenge to examine how we treat each other and what we say about others; especially in private. If there is a little bit of Lin in all of us, then there is also a little bit of Rush in all of us; and guess what there is a little bit of Sandra Fluke in all of us too.
So celebrate, don’t give up on your dreams, watch what you say and do, apologize, say you are sorry when necessary and keep on speaking truth to power. Speak out. Fight the Power…. You never know…

Well said! When I read what Rush had called that young woman, it stung me. It was so awful. Whie he may have apologized, I believe it came from a dark place. People may forget what you say to them, but they will never forget how you make them feel.
