Dear all,

It has been just about a week since we held our Second Ireland Sacred Harp Convention and we have all been slowly, hesitantly slipping back in to our normal lives. It was a huge success, as we are sure most of you will agree, and it was truly an invigorating and reaffirming experience for all of us Cork singers. Here, we would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend what it was:

Thank you to UCC School of Music and Mel Mercier for their support with the countless boring details that need attention when planning an event of this size. That is not to say that meetings with Mel have ever been boring; for the committee, they were probably the highlight of the final weeks of planning.

Thank you to Camden Palace for providing the Cork singing community with a home in which to flourish. We love and adore you. We would not be the same without you.

Thank you to Judy Caudle for gracing us with her presence and leading a wonderful singing school. Convincing us Cork folk to slow down was no mean feat and 269 will never be the same for us again.

Thank you to Séamus Hegarty and Danny (Luno) Forde for their ceaseless efforts in documenting every single move and sound we have made over the past few months. As you can imagine, we have made quite a few and it has been amazing to be able to relive it all again through the countless videos, recordings and pictures they have crafted.

Thank you to the planning committee for all their hard work, and to all the volunteers we have had over the last couple of months. There are too many to name but you know who you are and that your efforts have been greatly appreciated. Above and beyond the call of duty.

Thank you to all the singers who traveled from far and wide (and from down the road) to join us in song and fellowship. Thank you for your voices, your stories, your advice and your love. Without you all of our efforts would have been pointless. You have helped show us the meaning of community and for that we will be forever grateful.

Here are a few statistics as collected by Sinéad, our ever-vigilant secretary:

  • More than 100 leaders
  • 164 registered attendees (Mike was right!)
  • 166 songs sung (with countless more outside of convention singing hours)
  • Ireland, England, Scotland, Poland, Germany, Canada, France and the United States represented
We got to walk time and DRONE. One of our co-chairs lost her voice and had to speak through a human Mike-rophone. There were so many wonderful little incidentals that it is hard to recall them all. This weekend was special and we will remember it fondly.

We have some exciting things planned for the coming year, not least of all our All-Day Singing in October. Please keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for more details in the future. We sincerely hope to see some, if not all, of you back here very soon.

THANK YOU!

Love,
The Sacred Harp Singers of Cork

Cork City Library Demonstration

The Rory Gallagher Music Library (located within the Cork Central Library) has kindly welcomed us back for a participatory demonstration on Saturday 25th February - one week before the convention. The demonstration will start at 2pm and will run for approximately 90 minutes.

As well as singing from the Sacred Harp, there will be a short workshop where we will explain the basics of how to read this style of notation and talk about its role in the Sacred Harp tradition.

Sacred Harp Spreads to Dublin

Following a wonderful singing workshop last weekend, Dublin has become the home to a brand new community Sacred Harp sing.

Starting Friday 17th February, the group will be meeting every Friday evening in Exchange Dublin (a community-run, collective arts space in Temple Bar) from 7 - 9pm. The obvious exception to this will be the 2nd March when the Second Ireland Sacred Harp convention will be underway here in Cork.

Newcomers to the tradition are very welcome, no matter what their singing experience or ability might be. As this is a new group, we very much hope that people will lend their support. Initiatives like this thrive on community involvement - and besides, it is a lot of fun.

There will be no admission fee at any of these sings, though small donations are appreciated. Any questions can be directed to: sacredharpdublin@gmail.com

We would like to wish Sacred Harp Dublin the absolute very best of luck with all their efforts.

We are delighted to announce that this year’s pre-convention singing school will be led by Judy Caudle.

Judy Caudle (Eva, Alabama) is a life-long singer and learned from her father, singing school teacher, J. L. Hopper in north central Alabama. She is an active supporter of singings across the United States and is known as a strong song leader. She has taught at Camp Fasola the past several years and is the third-generation in her family to teach singing schools.

The school will take place in the UCC School of Music on Friday 2nd March. Full details to follow. Last year’s singing school (led by David Ivey and Neely Bruce) was well worth attending and we have no doubt that this year will be no different.

Last week, a substantial number of the Cork group provided the vanguard for an invasion to Germany - specifically, Bremen - to join them for their first all-day singing. It was difficult to know what to expect; the group has only been active for about a year, most of them had not attended any large sings and… they sing in an old WWII bunker!

What we did know was that they were very enthusiastic and cautiously eager to have us over. What we discovered was a group as warm, welcoming and friendly as any group we have ever come across. These guys took care of us, as we’re sure they will take care of you if ever you should visit. If you find yourself traversing the European mainland and feel that itch to sing, we could not recommend a more suitable place to do so.

We have begun uploading videos of the Cork all-day sing, held in the Camden Palace this past October 22nd. Have a look at the playlist on our YouTube page or play the video below.

Enormous thanks to Seamus Hegarty recording and editing all of these. There was a lot of footage to get through!

The Ireland Convention—the first large Sacred Harp singing for more than half of the participants—was an exceptionally emotional experience for visiting and Irish singers alike.

U.S. Sacred Harp singer, Jesse P. Karlsberg, recently published a very interesting essay focusing on the first Ireland Sacred Harp Convention and the idea of reciprocal travel between geographically distant singing communities. It is accompanied by a handful of excellent videos of the event.

Read it here.
