Lighters were first invented in the 16th century and were made
from flintlock pistols that used gunpowder. One of the very first lighters was
invented in 1823 by a German chemist, Johann Dobereiner, called the Dobereiner
Lamp. The lighter was very dangerous because it was so large and eventually fell
out of production by the 19th century.
The Flint was created in 1903 and when scratched, it creates a large spark to
light the fuel of a lighter. It is quite inexpensive and are widely used in
disposable lighters. During WWI, soldiers used wasted cartridges and glowing
wood blocks to make a quick lighter instead of having to use matches. They
believed that the initial spark of a match would alert snipers to their
position.
In 1932 the Zippo Lighter was invented and founded by George Blaisdell. Zippo
became a nationally recognized brand and was popular for its Life Time Warranty
and the feature of being windproof.
Lighters switched to butane fuel in the 1950's for many reasons. Among them
being able to control the flame was rather important, as well as having less of
an odor.

Lighting Your Cigar: The main goal is to light the
end as evenly as possible. When you are lighting the cigar, it is best when you
apply as little of the flame to the end of the cigar as possible. This prevents
the tobacco from charring, or carbonization, and imparting an unpleasant taste
unto it. To light your cigar properly, hold the flame about 2 inches away from
the cigar and slowly draw long puffs of air through the cigar. The flame should
jump up to the cigar. Rotate the cigar about a quarter of a turn with each new
puff. Continue this for 4-5 puffs and then check your work. If there is a tiny
unlit spot, you can blow on it to accelerate the glowing coal to drift over to
it. Take one or two steady puffs and then leave the cigar alone for at least 2
minutes as the first 1/8th to 3/16th of ash builds. Once this is complete have
laid the foundation of a cigar that will have a perfect burn.
When Cigar burns "tunnel" or "canoe". Your cigar is tunneling when the inner
filler is burning down and the outer layers, including the wrapper and binder,
are still unlit. This will taste unpleasant, as you are not smoking the balanced
blend. It will ultimately go out, as the inner core suffocates from lack of air.
If your cigar tunnels you can try to fix it by using your cutter and clipping
down the unburned exterior and then try to relight the cigar. A problem that is
more common than tunneling is canoeing. This is when your cigar is imitating a
canoe, by one half burning slower than the other. It can be caused by improperly
lighting the cigar, or by smoking too quickly, puffing away like mad. The best
way to fix this is to leave the cigar alone and let the slow side catch up as
soon as you notice it is happening. The sooner you "back off", the sooner the
cigar will even up. If you ignore it, it will get more and more pronounced. I do
not recommend "flash burning" the slow half, as it will usually leave a burning
taste on the rest of the cigar as you smoke it. Both of these syndromes can be
prevented by correctly lighting the cigar. Very windy conditions can also make
the cigar canoe to tunnel. Unfortunately, this is out of your control and is no
mark against your ignition techniques.
Type of Flame: When lighting a cigar, your goal is to use a flame that will
impart as few impurities as possible. You want a clean burn which can be
obtained through a butane lighter. Other lighters are undesirable because they
have two elements that can taint the taste of your cigar. Never use a candle, or
a lighter that uses any fuel other than butane.
How do I keep my pipe lit?
When having problems keeping your pipe lit, even when it is packed correctly,
take 5-6 puffs as you walk the flame around the whole bowl, charring the entire
area of the tobacco. Then tamp the ashes flat and even. Relight using another
5-6 good puffs and you should be on your way to an enjoyable, relaxing pipe
smoking experience! Be careful when tamping your pipe you should only be
crushing the ashes flat and even; not pushing down tobacco. You may tamp as much
as you like, but just push down the burning ashes onto the unburned tobacco.
Keep it even and keep the draw consistent.
