Honduras is rich in high-quality tobaccos, which are hand-rolled into superior
premium cigars. Even though it is a small country, in the 1960's the cigar
industry began to flourish. Cuban tobacco experts chose Honduras as their new
home during the revolution in Cuba. They brought with them, the expertise in
growing tobacco and cigar production. In 1960, the Honduran government asked
Havana for professional assistance in growing techniques, which was granted by
the Castro government. In 1961, experts traveled to Honduras with packets of the
best tobacco seeds. Over time, many Cuban exiles followed. among them were well
known planters and cigar makers Angel Oliva, FrankFrank Llaneza, Rolando Reyes,
Julio Eiroa, Ramon Martinez and Nestor Plasencia.
The Honduran soil and climate proved to be ideal growing conditions for Cuban
tobacco seeds, giving the tobacco strong flavors and aromas. Today, Honduran
cigars are of superior quality and sales are rated 2nd in the US after the
Dominican Republic. Honduran Cigars have been gaining in taste and expression
since more cigars have been produced from 100% Honduran grown tobaccos.

Honduras is located in Central America near
Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. With an unstable history, over the years,
Honduras has struggled with the fight for independence, hurricane devastation,
political diversity and human rights violation. All of these components together
has aided the country in becoming one of the poorest countries in Central
America.
After a long stint of military rule, in 1982 Roberto Suazo Cordova was elected
president and the country returned to a parliamentary democracy. But, Honduras
still faced extreme economic tensions along the border with Nicaragua. Using
Honduras a training facility, Nicaraguan Contra rebels waged war against the
Sandanista regime in Nicaragua. The United States has also used Honduras for
military exercises, as well as building bases to train Hondurans.
Carlos Flores Facusse was elected president in 1997, reforming the economy and
modernizing the government. Unfortunately, Honduras still faced high inflation,
unemployment and economic overdependence. In 1998, 13,000 Hondurans were killed
by Hurricane Mitch and causing over $5 billion in damage.
