Speaker Pérez Unveils Middle Class Scholarship Act

(Sacramento) – Between triple digit fee increases and the struggling economy middle class Californians are being squeezed out of the opportunity to get a higher education. Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez wants to renew the promise of a higher education for middle class students and their families. To renew that promise, Speaker Pérez has introduced the Middle Class Scholarship Act (www.middleclassscholarship.com) to reduce the cost of attending a CSU, UC or community college by two-thirds, saving thousands of students thousands of dollars every year. The Speaker says, not only do students deserve an opportunity to receive a quality college education, investing in California's students is an investment in our collective future. For every $1 we spend on higher education, the state gets a $3 return on its investment. The program will be funded by closing a wasteful tax loophole for out-of-state corporations.

Assemblymember Henry Perea, The Fresno Bee , Op-Ed, May 12, 2011:

“It is simply unacceptable that our state is being held hostage by Republican legislators who refuse to acknowledge or address our ongoing fiscal crisis.

“If we are going to be successful in making sure essential public safety services are being met, we need to resolve our deficit soon and the ball, quite frankly, is in the Republicans' court."

Assemblymember Rich Gordon,  Assembly Democratic Radio Address, May 13, 2011:

“At a recent jobs budget summit held in my district, I joined Speaker John Pérez, other Assemblymembers and Silicon Valley tech leaders to discuss the importance of protecting jobs while responsibly closing the budget deficit.

“It became clear throughout our discussions that job creation and the budget are closely linked issues, because we cannot close the book on this recession until Californians have quality, decent jobs.

“The business leaders we spoke with stressed the importance of educating California’s workforce, stressing the need to protect k-12 and higher education as key components of a well-educated, competitive workforce—one that is critical to California’s return to long term economic prosperity.”

    Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, E-alert, May 13, 2011:

"I regard the availability of affordable health care to be a basic human right. Pricing people out of the market or hiking rates simply to pad corporate profits without any reasonable justification is unacceptable."
