Frank Scheffer's document of Stockhausen's "Helicopter String Quartet" this weekend at the Nightingale

In 1992, Karlheinz Stockhausen, already one of the music world’s most eccentric composers, embarked on what was possibly his most wild and ambitious composition to date – a composition requiring the four members of a string quartet to perform in four separate airborne helicopters that transmit the sound of the performance to an elaborate multi-media set-up in the concert hall below.

If the logistics of this piece sound almost as fascinating to you as the results, then you are not alone. In 1996, filmmaker Frank Scheffer made a documentary of the Arditti String Quartet’s performance of “Helikopter-Streichquartett” that captures the inspiration and eccentricity of the piece and its composer. Scheffer is well known for his interest in and profiles of experimental musicians of all types, from John Cage, to Frank Zappa.

Chicagoans will get a rare opportunity to see the 81-minute film this weekend at the Nightingale. The screenings are Friday and Saturday at 7.

Support independent cinema while you treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind glimpse at total artistic indulgence and brilliance.

ACM's "The Sound of Silent Film" Runs March 16 - 18 at the Chopin

Access Contemporary Music is bringing back its popular The Sound of Silent Film to the Chopin Theater (1543 W Division) this Friday, March 16th through Sunday, March 18th. ACM’s Sound of Silent Film Festival is the only film festival that features modern silent films screened to live music, composed especially for the films by Chicago composers.

This year’s festival features a new score for La Jetee, the classic film that was the inspiration for Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys. It also includes a piece scored by Matthew Dotson, who is participating in Homeroom’s Physics for Listeners, for Chantal Akerman’s masterful “Hotel Monterey.”

Other films include the hilarious Waiting Room by Dutch filmmaker Jos Stelling, and, as part of a collaboration with Berlin-based Moving Silence, ACM is proud to present Egg Love by German filmmaker Birgit Moeller.

Now that the Chopin Theater has a liquor license you can enjoy the show with the tasty beverage of your choice. This is a great event that Homeroom has enjoyed in the past.

JEREMY TINDER on TRUBBLE CLUB

What do Jeremy Tinder, Joe Tallarico, Nate Beaty, Onsmith, and Grant Reynolds, all have in common? They’re all in Trubble Club and have contributed to Ten x Ten!

Colin: First I think we should explain who you are and what Trubble Club is… What is your relationship with the group and are you able to tell us a little more about how Trubble Club started?

Jeremy: Trubble Club began as a group of local cartoonists just getting together to hang out and draw. Many of us had been getting together and making exquisite corpse drawings or just hanging out in apartments or on stoops making drawings. One night, Lucy Knisley had a large group of us over, and the first Trubble Club comics were drawn. We didn’t set out to start a collective or collaborative group, it just happened.

We had so much fun, we started meeting weekly, and developed kind of a formula for making jam comics. Our comics generally begin as a single panel drawn by a single artist, but gets thrown into the “pile” or “stack”. That stack is passed around to artists ready to draw. Once they find a strip they have an idea to add onto, they do so, and pass the stack around to someone else. Some comics are finished in a session or two. Some take years. Some never get finished.
