Capital Design: Martyn Lawrence Bullard
What fun — Martyn Lawrence Bullard was a hit last week when he swept through on his first-ever trip to DC to speak to our designers about all the makings of a fabric line. DC Magazine Editor in Chief Karen Sommer Shalett was superb as a moderator between him and Schumacher’s senior vice president and creative director, Susan North. Here’s our scrap book from that great day, with photos by Kyle Samperton:

Martyn filled the house at our fifth-floor conference area:
And we told Karen she should start her own talk show, the way she led both the discussion and the Q&A afterwards:
Our audience was just as elegant as our speakers:
Kiera St. Claire, Marika Meyer
Berta Holmes, Lorna Gross
Megan Blake, Gloria Blaylock
Carol Freedman
Leanne Corayiannis, Barbara Hawthorn, and Rebecca Foley
Lunch was just steps away in the Schumacher showroom, where Martyn graciously signed books for more than two hours, giving everyone in this huge line a chance to get his oversized calligraphy on the cover leaf of Live, Love & Decorate.
Kiera St. Claire, Mikell Belser, Donna Greenfield, and Jacqueline Ionita congregate at the lunch.
Washington Fine Properties brokers Jason Mandel and Daniel Heider strike a pose.
Is there a more elegant setting for a picnic?
If it were me (and thank goodness it’s not!) I would probably get a bit grumpy after signing books for two hours, but Martyn was just as charming with the first autograph seeker as he was with the final one. Here his is, late in the game:

And as he did with so many of his fans, Martyn posed for pictures after signing their books:

Here his is with the entire Schumcher staff before his talk last Tuesday. The showroom is still ablaze with his fabric line hanging in the front windows.
We hope to see you on March 20 for the next lecture in our Capital Design series — a panel discussion on outdoor design and entertaining.
In the meantime, there were lots of fantastic accounts of the day in the local press, so here are the links if you want to read more about Martyn’s lecture:
