Double/Triple Vision

Multi-Monitor support for windows is way cool!
Really - if you never tried it and you have resources for second monitor and doual monitor video card do it!

I use doual monitor for programming. (actually triple monitor). I can have for example one code on one monitor and the other code on the second monitor. Or I can have application on one and writing help on the other. Or do many other things. It is really efficient.

What you need
You need a good multi-monitor video card such as Matrox DualHead, ATI Radeon with dual monitor or NVidia with dual monitor.
And then you need two monitors and serious operating system such as Win2000 or Win XP which has multimonitor support (Also Win98 has it).
Other alternative is to use your AGP video card as primary monitor and then add second PCI card as second monitor. (an on-board AGP video can't be used with another AGP)

I tried ATI but at that time I had Win 2000 and it doesn't fully support MultiMonitor feature on Win 2000. What it did was actually enlarge the screen to be 2x normal monitor. Then their application hydravision was trying to make it work - if I maximized a window it was scalled to full 2 monitors (brr...) The solution was to either upgrade to XP or try another video card. (After all I did both)

I got Matrox Millenium G550 Dual-Head and that worked perfect. It has full dual monitor support even on Win 2000 the same way as XP - use the monitors as Extended monitors. If I maximize window in one monitor it is really maximized in that monitor. As it should be.

One think has to be mentioned, while the Matrox is great for workstation (2D), it is slow runner for 3D.

Three Monitors
To go even further I decided to add third monitor. Later I upgraded to XP and I have Matrox AGP for dual monitors, so I added another PCI card (ATI Radeon 7000). The setup was simple and I had 3 monitors working right away. Then I rewrote the MultiMon to support 3 monitors (and also fixed it so it support 2 monitors on left or right).

All was fine, except that Matrox G550 is really slow on 3D. So I put the PCI card as the Primary monitor - that was faster. Well after few days it was clear the Matrox didn't really liked ATI (or vice-versa). Very often the cursors on Matrox driven monitors turned to some messy shifted image. A new Matrox drivers didn't help. This was the point I simply took it out and replaced with ATI Radeon AGP 9600 (two monitor support), and set it as primary and right monitor.

So in my setup Monitor 1 is PCI Radeon 7000, Monitor 2 and 3 are both served by single Radeon 9600.

That seems to work fine for now, the 9600 is speedy, but I am starting to have quite a collection of videocards.

MultiMon Task bar
The real multi-monitor support in Windows puts task-bar only in the primary monitor. The extended monitors are plain "takbarless". There is no other way to add another taskbar to the extended monitor.

So I created my MultiMon taskbar. A secondary taskbar which will be put on extended monitor.

Download

You can download full 2.1 version unrestricted and absolutely no nag version from this site.

Note: If you upgrading from any previous version, make sure it is not running (Properties - Unload Taskbar)!

mmtaskbar21.exe (~500kB)

Is it really Free?
Yes, no nags, no spam, no spyware (Yuck!)

Related Software

There is an interesting software called MaxiVista that can use your laptop (or any other PC) as a second monitor by connecting them together via network.

TaskBar

  • New 2.1 version with Hot-Keys (CTRL + ALT + arrow) to move the current window left or right
  • 2.0 version, with triple monitor support

What it does:

  • It adds second taskbar to the extended desktop on Monitor 2 (either right or left)
  • It can add third taskbar to the second Extended monitor if you have 3 monitors setup.
  • It shows only applications from that Monitor
  • It hides the applications on Monitor 2 from normal Windows Taskbar
  • Adds a Move to Monitor button to all windows applications.
  • Add Text Clipboard Extender (new 1.1.)
  • Very carefully written, I don't want to crash my own desktop!

Main Monitor TaskBar

Monitor 2 Task Bar

See, only applicataions from the particular monitor appear on the taskbar of that monitor!

Move To Monitor Button
One remarkable feature is the Monitor Button. It adds this button to every window and by clicking on it it will move the window to the other monitor. The arrow even change direction to point to which monitor it will move...

spacer spacer

If you use the 3 Monitors setup then the center (Primary) monitor buttons will give you choice to move window to either right monitor or left monitor.

spacer

New in 2.1: You can now use Hot-Keys CTRL+SHIFT+arrow to move the current window left or right!

Options
If you right click on an empty space on the new taskbar you can select Properties from the menu.

spacer

Here you can set stuff like Auto Hide or to use the Caption button feature (the Move to monitor added button)

New in 2.0
- support for both monitors on left or right
- support for 3 monitors (adds taskbar to both side monitors
- added cool simple text Clipboard extender.

Clipboard Extender
A simple but cool Text clipboard extender is added to the toolbar. It can be also rolled in or totally disabled.

spacer

This little box will capture all text Copy to clipboard operation and store. It will show you your last 100 text copy operation, you can select any text back.
Other hidden functionality of Clipboard extender:
F3 - Search. Type any text and press F3, it will quickly search for the presence of this text in all stored copy operations and select matches.
F5 - type any text and it will try to execute it. Type for example calc and press F5
Return - type any text and press return, it will be added to the clipboard list (and also copied to clipboard)
DEL - unroll the combo box so you see multiple items, Move cursor over item so it is selected (but don't click) and press DEL to remove it from list.

Limitations
Please note, this is a free software I wrote for my own purpose. Here are some limitations:

  • Works only on XP and 2000
  • The 3 monitor setup expect to have Primary monitor in the middle.

How to Install it
Run installation. It will add itself to the Startup menu.

What Windows versions it supports
First let me tell you If you don't have real Multi Monitor video card then this application will do nothing for you.
Even if you have faked multimonitor support like ATI did on Windows 2000 (It basically created double width but only one monitor) it won't help you.

I created it and I am using it on Windows 2000 and XP

Note: It doesn't work on Win95/98/ME, but then I wouldn't think of using multiple monitors on these OS anyway. It is enough to continuously loose resource memory on one monitor...

If you have dual monitor and you can test it - let me know...

Limitiations: With two monitors the secondary must be on right. The monitors must have the same resolution. With three monitors the secondary must be left and right with the primary in the middle. If time permits I may make it universal, but I have too many other projects.

How I got it done?
I must say it wasn't easy to do. Quite a project! The basic idea was simple, but then removing the buttons from the window taskbar and synchronizing two taskbars was some unexpected work. Then a systemwide shell hooks were created to inform taskbar of changes and to add the button to caption bars. Simple? Well I had to solve hundreds of small things and optimalize this and that, but now it is rock solid and takes very little CPU. And in my opinion it is the best free app of its kind.

And I learned few new things... which was also a goal on its own.

spacer
This appears to be my own desk. Yes, here the magic is born. Two 17" TFT Samsung monitors makes a huge difference, not to mention that I lattely added one 21" widescreen Gateway in the middle for 3 monitor setup.
