Dean O'Brien, 1932-2010

Dean O'Brien, editor of Voyageur magazine from 1989 to 1995, passed away June 16, 2010 in Minnesota at the age of 78. A native of Waukesha, Dean was a communication and journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, joining the original faculty of the new four-year school in 1968 after serving in the Marines, receiving his Ph. D. from UW-Madison, and working for newspapers in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. He became editor of Voyageur a year before his retirement as a full professor from UWGB. (more)

About Voyageur

Voyageur is a nonprofit magazine about the history of a 26-county area of greater Northeast Wisconsin. It's published twice a year, each June and December. Publication frequency is Summer/Fall and Winter/Spring. Each 64-page edition highlights historic people, places and events from the region's past. Voyageur has a readership of 10,000. It's distributed to homes, schools, libraries, businesses and other locations throughout Wisconsin, in nearly all fifty states and overseas. Voyageur has published two issues a year since its beginning in 1984. The magazine is published by the Brown County Historical Society in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and St. Norbert College in De Pere.

Jim Zwerg Featured in American Experience PBS Documentary

After deciding to participate in the Freedom Rides in May 1961, Jim Zwerg called his parents for support only to be told that he was "killing his father." As a white Freedom Rider, Zwerg was among the first to be attacked and sustained severe injuries. (More)

Sheboygan's Summer Kitchens

As soon as she opened the door, I knew we were entering a special, if not sacred, place. I was standing with LaVern Meeusen on the threshold of her summer kitchen, located on the Fischer homestead in rural Sheboygan County. LaVern, a delightful woman, who was in her early 80s, is the oldest living direct descendant of the Fischers, German immigrants who arrived on the south side of Elkhart Lake more than 150 years ago. Voyageur’s Summer/Fall
2011 Issue

We've been bombarded with fast-breaking news stories and dramatic headlines lately. Some news—the Packers Super Bowl win— was good, but other stories have polarized us.Oddly enough each Voyageur story has a connection with recent news events. Last December Bishop David L. Ricken announced that the Catholic Church had officially recognized the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in little Champion,Wisconsin, as the only Marian shrine in the United States. This puts it in the same company as Lourdes in France and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. This was national news, so Voyageur contacted the man who broke the news—Erik Eckholm, The New York Times national religion correspondent. His article starts on page 28. (More)
