A DANGEROUS METHOD (R)

spacer

Drama, Biopic, Foreign & Arthouse, Adaptation. 1 hr. 33 min.  Early in his career, psychiatrist Carl Jung takes on the challenge of a seemingly impossible case, a deeply disturbed, beautiful young woman named Sabina Spielrein. Jung employs his mentor Sigmund Freud's experimental "talking cure" in treating Sabina and the treatment proves to be successful. This results in Freud and Jung becoming colleagues rather than master and student, but before long, both men are involved with their patient, complicating their relationship.

Directed by: David Croenenburg

Starring: Viggo Mortensten, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, Vincent Cassel, Andre Hennicke

Globe and Mail
Liam Lacey
"A Dangerous Method is a suave chamber piece: a series of glimpses of two 20th-century intellectual titans, in friendship and separation, and the story of a remarkable woman who history had swallowed up, brought into the light again." A
USA Today
Scott Bowles
"As a biographical film, Method gives real insight to its subjects, especially Jung." B
Washington Post
Ann Hornaday
"Perhaps Cronenberg's most transgressive movie yet, one in which ideas - rather than their fetishistic signifiers - possess more energy and verve than the most calculated shock effect.

A-

New York Times
A.O. Scott
"A Dangerous Method" is full of ideas about sexuality - some quite provocative, even a century after their first articulation - but it also recognizes and communicates the erotic power of ideas." A

Rolling Stone
Peter Travers

"The actors give it their all, especially Knightley, whose jaw- jutting, heavily accented and unfairly criticized portrayal gives this erotic mind-bender its fighting spirit." B+

THE DURGAS

LIVE AT THE PEOPLE'S THEATRE: (All ages concert)

By layering authentic reggae, African, and eastern European folk elements over strains of heartfelt American roots music, The Durgas' weaves the sounds and cultures of their upbringing into their music. The brothers Benjii (Voice, Guitar) and Christopher Simmersbach (Lead Guitar), and Patrick (Guitar) draw much of their musical influence from their childhood. They were born in Bavaria, but raised in various parts of Thailand, Tanzania, Mali, Senegal, Italy, and the U.S.  Joining them on the Big Island tour is Katy J. Arnovick (Bass), Tom Penny (Sax), Alex Czerny (Piano) and Orlando Smith (Drums).

The Durgas visited the Big Island last year in February 2011. Since then, they have had an eventful year of touring and exciting adventures. In summer 2011 they completed an extended European Tour with 32 shows in 31 days! Immediately following the tour they embarked on an international car rally called The
Caucasian Challenge (www.caucasianchallenge.com/). The Challenge is a minimal assistance motor rally – a drive your own vehicle (The Durgas Tour Van) adventure that takes you through mostly unknown yet tumultuous regions you may have only heard about on the world news. They drove from Central Europe through Hungary, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Georgia, Nagorno Karabakh and
Armenia. The finish line is in Yerevan, the magnificent capital of Armenia, playing shows all along the way. They brought along a generator in order to play even where there was no electricity available, from beach shows on the Black Sea in Turkey to remote villages high up in the mountains of Georgia and in war-torn Nagorno-Karabakh where no band has played in recent history. The entire musical rally was documented by Kraatz Film, Hungarian film company lead by founder and Palm D’Or Prize recipient (Cannes Film Festival) Marcel Ivany. The fulllength documentary feature film is scheduled to be released by the end of 2012. The film captures the wonderful surprises and amusing complexity of touring in areas where bands
rarely go. “This adventure was definitely up there with the most incredible experiences I have ever had” said Graigrai (lead guitarist). THE DURGAS have always made it a goal to tour "off the beaten path" into areas of conflict or distress, to play music for and with the people of these hard-hit areas and have now, for the first time in their long history, thoroughly documented this amazing adventure.

Back in Los Angeles after a busy Summer, The Durgas supported the release of the feature documetary Into The Current (www.intothecurrent.org/), a film by Jeanne Hallacy (Music by The Durgas) Into The Current tells the story of Burma's unsung heroes - its prisoners of conscience - and the price they pay for speaking truth about a military dictatorship. This film has now been nominated for the Social Justice Award at the Santa Barabara Fim Festival , and been nominated at the One World International Human Rights Film Festival, The Lucerne International Film Festival and The International Buddhist Film Festival to name a few. Music for the film was composed by The Durgas and features song such as “Send the Wind” and “Face the Sun” written by The Durgas and donated to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners in Burma (AAPPB). Benjii Simmersbach performed a live version at the screening in Santa Barbara and represented The Durgas at the Festival. This April they will head back to Europe for a five week tour. The Durgas love the Big Island and always look forward to the Aloha Spirit they receive every time they come to Hawaii.

The potent and provocative journey in Chronicle never stops springing surprises. You'll be hooked. A-
Los Angeles Times
Betsey Sharkey
"This mind-and-fork-bending sci-fi saga comes from the freaky imaginations of director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis, who've packed their feature debut with smartness."

B

Newsday
John Anderson
This very promising feature debut by director Josh Trank turns into one smart thriller, a parable of unchecked power, and an action film in which the action -- although seen through a viewfinder -- carries the viewer away.

A-

New York Times
Manhola Dhargis

"Mr. Russell and Mr. Jordan are as likable as their characters, but it's Mr. DeHaan who pulls you uneasily in." B+
Chicago Sun-Times
Roger Ebert

Directed by: Ken Kwapis

Starring: Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Kristen Bell

Washington Post
Stephanie Merry
"Cold War-era bonding over whales? It would sound utterly absurd if it weren't based on fact. And that's part of what makes this movie fun for adults." B
Dallas Morning News
Roger Moore
"Political cynicism, media opportunism, dogmatic native traditions, corporate greed and environmentalist stubbornness are each, in turn, dashed against this sunny confection." B+
San Francisco Chronicle
Mick LaSalle
"Instead of this being a story of a bunch of lovely people doing a lovely thing, it's rather the story of average people who become much better people as a result of doing a lovely thing, even though some start out doing it for less than noble reasons."

A-

New York Times
Rachel Saltz
"Big Miracle" gets off to a shaky start, but once revved up, it becomes an involving work-against-the-clock-and-the-odds action movie." B-

New York Daily News
Joe Neumaier

"The genuinely sweet nature of this sometimes clunky movie is mixed with a little sass, and wins you over." B+
